I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

When you guys have a retention bonus on your card do you guys ask for a better offer than what they are offering you or you guys grab right away what they give you and are happy?
Just curious to know once you have an offer on your account are there a few offers or just one select offer to offer you?
Depends. If you've heard many reports of a better offer, you may want to HUCA. If it's an offer you feel confident in, take it and never look back

Depends. If you've heard many reports of a significantly better offer, for people with similar spending/card age as you, you may want to HUCA. If it's an offer you feel confident in, take it and never look back

Meh, I don't know if I'd fix that for me like that. Not all offers are based solely on age and spending, at least IMO.

Don't bet on the fact alone that you heard of such an offer. IMHO.

Like I said, if it's good, take it unless you've heard better. Otherwise can't hurt to call again

If you heard better, and you give up on a offer you do have, there isn't a chance you went get your offer again?
Say you are offered 20k and you've heard of 25k, if you don't take 20k,not only you may not get the 25k you may lose the 20k too, no?

Also, I figured it was more like "they offered me $20 statement credit and I heard of a $200"

Well for such spending 30k is not who knows what.

If spending that much by having the card alone with regular spending you hit 2.4 million, so another 30k is a drop in the bucket or a nice way of saying ty for being a member.

To take a risk and decline the first offer and then call back and ask for another offer I don't know if I would do that but with one rep I would definitely try to haggle and see what I can pull out, it can't hurt once they offered you something the only thing you could expect is something better, CMIIW

So your telling me if I call five times and all the reps say sorry there's no offers for you calling the six-time might break it?

I'm sorry, seems I misread your original message, but yes the sixth time may break (with significant time in between calls).
My point was the offers aren't steady, so if you have one now you may lose it later, same if you don't have any you may get one later.

Personal SPG first AF
Call 1: shut down within 30 seconds with out reviewing accounts.
Call 2: may have been same rep as call one so an immediate HUCA.
Call 3: 7k/1k or $75/2k obviously took option 1.

She said "obviously we are giving this offer so you should keep the card open for another year." but then when she read the disclosure it read "the card must remain OPEN and in good standing at TIME OF OFFER COMPLETION"
So go figure.
