I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

It's the standard for the aspire. The best is to use all the credits for 2021 and the annual certificate, then downgrade to surpass, spend $15k, get another night, and wait for an upgrade offer.

From my experience, it really depends on what "retention offers" they see attached to your account. you just need to ask.
These offers are available or renew multriple times a year. good time to ask is end of yera, beggining of year or after AF posts.

I phrased it something like: due to Covid, the travel benefits of the card don't really give much value. I'm considering downgrading or canceling... are there any courtesy credits or retention offers available for me before I do that?

FYI, these were on my wife's account. I had no such luck with my own Hilton Aspire and Biz Plat cards

Problem is finding a way to use the $250 resort credit right now before downgrading

$250 on CSR, no spend.

$100 plus $200 after 4K spend on Amex BG.
Did you get charged 550 or 450 AF?

Nothing at all for me on Amex Platinum (personal).  They say I had a retention offer last year because I applied points to cover charges.  I'm at almost 12 months on that; should I pay the fee and wait the 13 months and then downgrade to gold if there continue to be no offers?  Would I get credited back most of the fee?

IINM you have a month to cancel and receive a full refund, or you can downgrade whenever and get a prorated refund.

They told me the same 2 days ago, I asked if they could look into the $200 statement credit offer, and after putting me on hold for a few minutes they got back to me with a spend 3K/$200 statement credit offer.
