I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Yes, first they misheard and checked for promotional offers. Then, I said, No, Retention offers - for keeping the card open, and they found it.

My experience with Chase vs Amex:

Chase
Me: I was just charged my annual fee and I was wondering if there are any retention offers available on my account.
Agent: Let me check. Yes/No.
3/4 the answer was no.

Amex
Me: I was just charged my annual fee and I was wondering if there are any retention offers available on my account.
Agent: Let me tell you about all the great benefits of your card- goes on to speak for 5 minutes about the benefits
Me: I'm aware of the benefits. I want to know if there are any retention offers available on my account.
Agent: Here's a breakdown of all the benefits you used on your card this year- goes on to list all the benefits again and which ones I used etc. Your benefits totaled $X, while your annual fee is $X. You have netted $X in benefits.
Me: I'm aware, I just want to know if there are any retention offers available on my account.
Agent: Ok. I can offer you X points for X spend.
2/2 the answer was yes.

Just had the same experience!
I told them i did the math and it is not worth it for me!
They offered me 15k for a 2k spend on my gold would this spend include adding a au and getting another 5k?
would it be worth it to keep for 20k?

For Amex, there usually is more than one offer, so always worth it to ask if there are more options available. Usually the rep will give you the better option first, but you never know.

For Chase, I still have never scored a retention offer.

if you redeem the free night it's not bad also these days they let you stack with some extra points if u want more than 35k a night.
