I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

no spending. no closing. just said that i don't really use the card anymore. they gave me that offer contingent on my first paying the AF. did the same for my wife's and be both got the credit w/o having to pay it first.
Bigger question is, why don't you use the card... Or did you already hit the 50k

Well. When having a good (CC) deal ahead like the 10k promo. I'll go for it but closing and reopening CC's "frequently" is not my line...

Good luck, barclays just reads off the other reps notes.

Im sure he will close them after the additional miles post and after the 5x categories have been utilized. Besides you can have multiples.

Tried to get US AF waived many times and the best I got was 5k miles after $1k spend.

Finally got a supervisor in retention today to do it. She claims the 40k signup may be clawed back as it's contingent on the fee being paid and the crediting of it will negate the payment. Miles already transferred to my FF account so I'm not so worried about it.

The main point here is that I was denied every time as the offer for AF to be waived wasn't available on my account and therefore no rep would give me the credit. The supervisor was still able to give it even though it wasn't "available", just an FYI for anyone getting denied.

2 months into my Citi Prestige card (Got 60K TY Points, $500 Airline Credits), called to cancel before 37 days of annual fee and I was offered 15K for $2,000 spend in the next 6 months, although 15K Points is not worth $350 I still took it
