Topic Wiki

I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Quite some time, I should really close it, eh?
I have that card open since December,  which I've meant to close several times, and then there was some new goodie that made keeping it open well worth it (match to 100k, PP, GE). At this point I think it's worth leaving it open

Thank you- Premier Card $125 annual fee WAIVED!!!
« Reply #226 on: September 01, 2011, 02:46:56 PM »
Well i applied for the ty premier card and got accepted two weeks ago.
Well today i called up retention and complaioned that they are not waiving my fee. Well the lady would not budge for close to 10 min.
Finally I am just about giving up when i thought of asking them would i get a refund for the 125 if i cancel now...suddenly she perks up and puts me on hold for about 5 min
She gets back on the phone and says she can give me a statement credit after spending 4500 within 3 months!  :D
BTW i called about a week ago for the aa visa to waive the 85 and the guy waived it in about 5 seconds flat and told me double miles for spending>750 for the next 6 months

I had a Canadian SPG which was up this past month.  i called and asked them downgrade my card however they said they can't do that in Canada and the membership fee is a whopping $120 here.  The rep offered me 3000 points and I said no thanks.  he then offered me 5000 and half off the fee but since I had opened another SPG a few months ago I said no thanks and to close the card.  He then said he could transfer the credit limit to my other SPG card.  I asked him if I could have 3000 points even though I was closing the card and he said sure!

I also had a citi mastercard AA renew this month.  I called and they took away the $85 fee and gave me 1000 miles.

called to cancel citi aa business, no offer.
cancel aa personal, $85 credit plus 750 bonus for 12 months for 750 spend.
took it but am wondering how that affects being able to reapply 1 or 2 years from now. i know churning is hard but would it not be easier if i closed it ?

My CO OPP yearly fee is coming up in October. Should i wait till they charge me and then call asking to waive the fee or should i call now before they charge me, I do alot of charging on the card, just wondering if its easier to get waived before or after the fact.

thank You

How much do you spend on it per year?
Why not switch to Sapphire Preferred?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Called the citi Retention dep, shmoozed them up a little bit, these are the current promos they can offer, for the consumer cards if your currently not enrolled in any promo they can give 1.5 mpd (im not sure till when this promo is) if your enrolled in a promo, they can offer 2 mpd for spending in the next six months with a cap of 10k,
For the Biz card they have a promo of 10k bonus points is you spent 5k in the next six months.
I wasn’t eligible for the 1.5 promo since i currently have a promo of 75k miles after spending 1.5k/4k in the first six months, Ive already spent that the first month and got the bonus points, so go figure out citi.
anyway extra 30k AA  ;)

Just had my $65 fee kick in. Spoke to amex and they trasferred me over to cancellation department. I told them i had been a customer for almost 10 years (due to my parnets adding me as an AU) and that I think they should offer me something, as ideally I wouldnt like to cancel.
they said that the best they could do would offer me 1000 points or a $10 statement credit. I told them I would call back after thinking about it... Any suggestions?

LAst night I called about 2 cards- I called to cancel my  Consumer Amex (I have a business one I just opened) and they didn't offer me anything to keep it, even though I spent on it alot as my primary card. We called Continental Onepass to cancel my wife's card (I have the presidential plus card) and they offered us either 10000 points or $100 credit to keep it. I asked about my United card and whether I should close it (I only used it to get points) and Chase said to hold it since they don't know yet how the cards will be merged.

Anybody get anything for keeping open Chase Continental recently?  Any tips to getting good offer?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.
