I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Free $85 Statement Credit from AA Platinum
« Reply #287 on: November 09, 2011, 05:45:37 PM »
I called to tell them that I was not interested in paying the yearly membership and that I was going to cancel my card, and they made me an offer to enroll FOR FREE where I make 5 eligible purchases (no balance transfers, convince checks, cash advances, interest charges, fees, & items returned for credit are not eligible) (no minimums at any stores I want with in 3 months) and they will issue me a free $85 statement credit on my account.

Good Luck!!!!

I called Amex about my SPG card today after mailing in my statement and paying the $65 annual fee yesterday.  I told them I have several cards open with annual fees and was hoping they could wave or reduce it for me.  I knew the answer would be no but I wanted to make them say it before asking for points, as I figured it would only help me get empathy from the CSR.  She said she couldn't reduce or eliminate the fee due to class action lawsuits filed against Amex for charging the fee to some customers and waiving it for others.  She did however give me 3,000 starpoints as a courtesy and she noted that I use that card a lot.  The whole call was under 5 minutes.

I would have paid the fee even without the bonus points so I can say I'm happy with the results.

I called Chase to see what kind of retention offer they can give me for keeping CO. After a brief hold I was told they will review my account and let me know. Will keep you posted.

If I do end up closing the card, will the club passes and other goodies I received in the mail no longer work?

Lastly (and I apologize if this is in the wrong thread, its just related to my retention card), prior to doing 2BM for SP and Freedom (I don't see a 3rd offer of much significance), should I bring my balance down to $0 on my CO? If yes, do I then need to wait for my next billing cycle before doing the 2BM?

It would definitely help. You have to wait for the bank to report your $0 balance, normally takes a cycle of non-use.

Just got this email from Chase:

Dear Shmelly,

Thank you for the opportunity to assist you today.

Because the annual fee is consistent with the terms and
conditions of the credit card, I regret I am unable to
waive it on an open account.

We do offer a wide variety of reward-based and cash back
products, some without an annual fee, that you might find
more suitable to your needs. To view available products,
please visit chasecreditcards.com.

If you want to close the account, may I suggest you wait
until after the next billing statement as you would lose
miles for any unbilled transactions. To close the
account, please use any of the following options:

* Call us at the number listed below.
* Send us an e-mail using the Secure Message Center.
* Send a letter to the following address:

Cardmember Services
PO Box 15298
Wilmington, DE 19850-5298

If you have any further questions, please reply using the
Secure Message Center.

Thank you,
