I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

I don't have any information from experience but from my limited understanding of the credit card world, just because they've approved you for a lower card, doesn't mean that they'll give you a higher card (unless CSP is considered at the same level as Freedom).
I've upgraded with no issues.
Life is as good as you make it...

Just called for my Ink Plus (Year 1). Couldn't get them to waive the AF, but after pushing I got the supervisor to give me 5,000 points.

He probably did that manually, not as a retention, just fyi
Good job!

Correct. But apparently he noted that I shouldn't get anything else if I call back again. I believe him because I heard a lot of typing.

All about the rep you get. Some won't look at the notes properly, some are nice and some will read them and tell you to take a hike.

True. Though doubt I'll have the patience to call again. I had to really push this guy to give me something and when I called for my wife's Ink, even after negotiating a lot all they were willing to do was send a request to the higher ups (which will probably result in nothing).

Depends. Happened to me once on my CSP. 2 days later I saw a credit for the AF in my account. As usual, YMMV.

Nice! No refund (yet) for me though. They did say they'd call me within 7-10 business days though.

20k MR after 3k spend for personal plat.

But mentioned ~5 times that I have to agree to keep the card open for another year, should I be worried to close as soon as retention posts?

(I know I shouldn't, but wondering if they got stricter lately)

ETA: it's actually 5k immediately, and another 15k after spending 3k in 60 days
