I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Just looked over my bills, I was charged $95 for my delta gold Amex on July 17.
Can I still get any bonus if I call them up or change my account to the Classic (they already took away the boost miles, so gold status its worthless to me)...

Just got charged $65 for starwood annual fee. If I remember correctly last year I got a $50 retention bonus through SM.

Should I try SM or better to call?

Is there any easy way to tell when the Annual fee is due? Should it be noted on the online account?
Thanks

Just got 15000 MR for keeping my Plat open. I told them 450 was a lot of money for me right now (true) though i enjoyed the benefits of having the card i was wondering if there was anything they can offer me to make it easier to keep open - either in fee reduction or extra points. They told me the fee can't be reduced b/c of the benefits but they transferred me to member services who offered me $100 or 15000 points if i agree to keep it open for a year, to post w/in 2 weeks. I tried getting 20k but no dice. All in a day's work.

I was wondering the same if it was an actual 'agreement'.  Citi gave my wife hell for asking to close an AA account after giving her the $85 retention credit, as *if* she agreed to keep it open.  Obviously that wasn't a condition but they verbally almost forbid her from closing the card, haha.

It's (presumably) not a binding agreement. Obviously they're giving you a retention bonus so that you keep the card open for the next year--especially if they're crediting the annual fee to you--but, IME, the retention agent just wants to prevent you from cancelling your account on that phone call. (AFAIK, the compensation for these agents is at least somewhat performance based.)

That's why I find it weird that the CSR expressly conditioned the bonus on the yearly "agreement."

He expressly asked me and waited for an explicit answer. I happen to plan on keeping it open anyway, because I do like having it. I really just wanted to cover the costs of another year (or most of them), though I didn't expect 100k this time, I figured if they'd give me anything close to a signup bonus it'd cover costs. As I mentioned previously somewhere else, I already signed up for and got another Plat w/o closing this one, figuring I'd close whichever after getting the bonuses. It's def better for me to leave open the longer standing one.

With AMEX it does not matter as long as at least one remains open.

I don't mean for credit. I mean because it's the card I already have on file and is familiar.
