I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Can I cancel my Starwood amex and request the annual fee back if I just paid it on last statement?

And how long do I need to wait to reapply and get a new spg amex with signup bonus?

My, you age fast.

He asked how big, so I chose a random number since he didn't provide any frame of reference / measuring unit.

I know, I know.

I should have followed your lead and put:

/kidding

Anyway, I'ma go out on a limb and guess he's how big = how much he spent on the card.

I assumed the same thing, but people need to learn to post what they mean.

When is best to call to get retention before annual fee posts, after, or no difference.

I don't think there's a difference, some people even manage two retention bonuses a year (one at the 6-month mark and another at the 12-month(, or more...

Just make sure not to say you want to cancel, lest they just say ok and cancel you. Say you're considering closing the card because...

...your friend was offered [insert best retention offer you know of for that card, or something you'd be happy with] and you want to know if that's available for you as well.

I actually called on my spg twice in one year by accident and they gave me a 2nd retention bonus. I felt stupid though when she said shes sees that I got a goodwill bonus already once that year already (which she said was probably a retention bonus because it was around the time my card was up for renewal)

is this true? starwood membership consulting services team (retention dept) say the offers for the retention bonuses are computerized and could only be given if it shows an offer? Or is it the agent and i should call again?
