I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Yup, Andaz WeHo and Hyatt 48 Lex are outstanding values at category 4.
Other incredible deals at cat. 4 are the PH Seoul and PH Melbourne.

So don't.
There's no sin in paying $75 for a cat. 4 night.

Or you can (ostensibly) pay the $75 and cancel within 30 days, you get the night and keep the cash :)

Don't think that works. They say the night posts 6-8 weeks after your card anniversary
Life isn't about checking the boxes. Nobody cares.

They also said 6-8 weeks after my anniversary I'd receive my CO/UA lounge passes.  My fee hit on 2/1 and the passes arrived 2/14.  I plan on calling to cancel after work tonight (well, I plan on aiming for a retention bonus, but I just got my new UA card last month so nothing lost if I have to cancel).  Granted, CO/UA is a different program than Hyatt...

That's a mistake. Should've applied for a new card and moved over the line to get it approved.

I got 1000 spg points. They actually made me verbally agree not to close my account. The next day I received an email stating as per my request they closed all the additional cards. As this never happened I now have my way out, if they don't upkeep their end of the deal I don't have to either.

How to best get bonus miles for threatening cancellation?
« Reply #489 on: February 19, 2012, 02:03:35 AM »
I have an aadvantage card(my oldest current one so I don't really want to close it) and I just got hit for this next years renewal fee. I read many times that if you call and threaten to complain you can get out of them some retention bonuses. Anyone have experience with this card? Tips?

I found that I didn't have to threaten at all.  I just calmly explained that "I have too many cards with an annual fee, and I am probably going to close some, but would like to keep this one open.  The fee is rather steep for me, so is there any possibility of waiving it?"

3 minutes later the rep told me they credited my account for the fee.

I'm pretty sure that Dan's moving credit suggestion aside(assuming you. Get declined or just don't want to apply) you can probably switch your card to any other Citi card with no annual fee rather than close it and then decide what you want to do

I sent a secure msg to amex re my starwood card asking to wave annual fee. They said they cant. They also denied to give any retention bonus. What would you suggest?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

Remember, once they tell you no to waiving the fee (which they will), ask for points

Amex platinum after 1st year. Was offered choice of $200 or 25,000 MR. I took the later.
Was anybody successful in getting platinum retention bonuses by requesting it from the agent?

My year is up and I called to cancel my amex plat to avoid the $450 fee. Even though I was very serious about canceling they offered me $400 or 50K MR to stay another year.
Took the 50K MR of course.
