I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

I called retention for AA citi card. They credited account for $85 and the annual fee doesn't get charged for another month. If I cancel now do you think they will take it back.
(I really upset with them b/c i used 30K link on DD main site instead of 75K links on forums last year. They wouldn't match it either. Citi stinks)
what did you tell them, i couldnt get them to credit me?

Just called for retention bonuses on 3 cards. 2 were the citi AA cards, amex/visa. Offered $85 credit for visa + 1000 bonus miles per $1000 spent per billing cycle and for the amex, a straight $85 credit for 5 purchases within 3 months. The 3rd card was the BA visa with chase and the CSR simply said there is no offer associated with my account. Was planning on trying again later or just moving the credit line over and canceling the card during the next app-o-rama in a month or two. My only worry is that the annual fee will hit and I'll have to pay before canceling, but I suppose there's a 30 day grace period with chase?

After calling for the continental card and getting a 100 credit (after fee +15$) I had my wife call for her card and they said nothing they can do and they cancelled the card so there would not be a fee . When she got off the phone I told her I didn't really want her to cancel it so she called back and told them she didn't want to cancel it and it was a mistake they told her they can reinstate it starting in the morning ( they said no credit check ) . Guess what they refunded the fee when they cancelled it and they never put it back on so got refunded the 85$ fee
Did anyone ever try this ? Do u think it was a fluke ? Would it work with other cards ???
