Topic Wiki

I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Wow thats awful. They used to give 10k SPG points. They almost cut that down by 3.

How long have you had that card open? My annual fee just hit on for year 1 on that card, but they havent offered anything. Im thinking I need to wait till month 13th.

Called back today, and mentioned to the lady that I am thinking of cancelling the card because of the AF, she then 'offered' me to downgrade it to the no AF, with I refused because I want the free baggage, so then she transfer me to the guy that offer me spend 99 in the month and get 99 with I accept.

Lesson learned. Always to mention that "you're thinking of closing the card .."

SPG Biz: 5k points up front and then 15k for spending $1K, decided to cancel
SPG Personal: 20k points for spending $2K in 3 months, I'm thinking it may be worth taking that offer?

So you cancelled because you didn't want to spend $1k, but you're fine spending $2k? Why didn't you just take the offer and keep it open? It's worth it for the free night it comes with.

Actually the first offer was better!! Even without retention, the 2 free nights are worth more than the AF, Just used 2 nights at the JW Marriott Chicago , the cash rate was $449 a night.

Don't think I will be able to use the free night certificate this year and have become very unhappy with Bonvoy. I'm considering keeping the personal so I don't lose that credit line, the biz wouldn't affect my personal credit line...

On second thought, I could probably sell the free night certificate. Can I still call AMEX and reverse the cancellation?
