I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

AA Citi AAdvantage Executive.
Shpiel: Just got my statement with my annual membership fee posted. Am re-evaluating all my credit card costs and usage and, given that I have several cards from other companies, am considering costs and benefits of keeping this card open. Want to know if there are any offers available to me on this account?
First agent looked, said no, asked if I'm considering closing the account, said yes, she said need to transfer you to retention specialist.  Maria then asked me the same, and I told her I had gotten offers to motivate my retnention in the past and would like to know if offers exist at present.
She read the first one: 7 months, spend $1,500 per month, get $50 statement credit per month.
I asked if there are any other offers, and she said there are no other offers related to the annual fee. "Would you like to me see if there are any other offers available to you?"  I said no, I would rather not know if there is any way to save money.  (j/k).
She then read me the second offer:
"It's not an offer specific to the annual fee." Spend $5,000 in 3 months and get 15,000 AA miles.
I asked if the two offers are mutually exclusive, or if I could have them both. (Greedy much?)
She said only one or the other, so I took the latter. :)
Cheshbon:
First offer: Spend $10,500 over 7 months, get back $350.
Second offer: Spend $5,000 over 3 months, get back 15,000 AA, which to me are worth at least $225, maybe more.

I quoted above the 2018 offer.
This year's offer is not nearly so lucrative:
One offer only: Spend $3,000 per month * 3 months. Get a single $100 statement credit.
I decided to hold off on the offer for now.  Maybe it will change before the statement due date of 9/1?

Called for the Amex Bonvoy biz after the $95 posted. No retention offer but I got $40 courtesy credit (after 3rd call), because of my spending. Better than nothing + the annual night.
