I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Called citi regarding my AAdvanatge (amex). they will refund the $85 on condition that I make 5 purchases in the next 3 months

i called for the second time for my aa platinum
they told me that they want to keep me as a customer blah blah blah...
but bec i was charged the fee in feb, she told me she cant credit it (even if i cancel)
this was a supervisor (who was super nice) - does this make sense?

she told me she could offer an additional bonus point per $ spent in the next 6 months up to 5000 points.
i told her that thats not worth it so she offered 2 bonus points for every $ up to 10,000
i asked if there was a set amounts of points i could get as opposed to per $ so she offered 3,000 points for $500 spend
i took that bec i dont think the rewards are worth spending alot on this card

so, if i call back do u think i would get a better offer? can they refund the $85 after 2 months

as a side note, i asked her if i have to charge the ticket to this card to get the first bag free and she told me that she thinks u dont necessarily have to - as long as ur mileage number (thats connected with the card) is used when u get the ticket.
any experience with that?

I plan on waiting until I know if I will be getting my fee refunded before using it for purchases.  If I get it refunded then I will spend the 4000 in may and june.
+1
Would there be any gain in calling before the annual fee posts or should I wait until it does? If I can get the annual fee credited I will get to spending right away!

I say wait until the last minute and cancel the downgrade.  Then see if the fee reposts.  It might not (in fact it might even reset the year timer if you are lucky), but if it does you can always cancel the card at that point.

My PRG card fee is coming up soon (in may) so I called to cancel. They offered me 7,500 points now and another 5,000 after spending $500 in 60 days.
Is it really chutzpadik if I downgrade to Zync in a month or two?

Nothing except that the yearly fee is only $25, which is the cheapest charge card that Amex offers AFAIK so it's a nice downgrade option

Dang, I've canceled many of these and they always told me they couldn't offer anything.
Do you have other cards with them? What was your avg monthly spend?

At first they also told me that they couldn't offer me anything, but in the end they did.
I spend only a couple of bucks a month on the card (mainly gas purchases) and I have an SPG

I called up to cancel and asked rep when is annual fee due as I want to cancel by then and then I told him as an afterthought if he can come up with something really good I can re think my decision. He then came back and said either 100 dollars or 12.5k.

I just got my first fee from Amex for my spg card. Should I call them or can I just send them a message? Is there a chance they'll take the whole fee off?
