Topic Wiki

I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Anyone have any luck with a retention bonus fro the Cap One Venture card?

Was just going to post, no luck. And they weren't nice about it either, like, making it sound like I'm greedy for asking.

What about ballpark? Are we talking $40k+ like the others who got sizeable retentions?

Annual fee on old Chase United card just came up for $60 with a $36.46 automatic refund. I called to cancel as I don't really need the card and anyway want to cut down my credit line. They offered me a full refund of $60, I now have posted on the account a $36.46 refund plus a $60 refund. I'm probably going to cancel the card anyway but hey thanks chase for the extra $36!

if its an ald card you may not wanna close it. Closing your older lines of credit can drop your score.

It's not that old I just meant to differentiate between mine and the current card.

same experience. im thinking of cancelling as opposed to downgrading to reduce my total credit line with chase, to avoid AA.

What do you guys think.
I suppose it depends how big your current credit line is. I transferred all my credit to a new card I was turned down for and then reconsideration opened it because of the credit transfer. They had to leave a 5k minimum on the sapphire card. Now I will just close it so I have less cards...

Why did you get an automatic refund?

My recent experience with retention bonus':

Citi AA Master card: got the annual fee refunded, plus 2 miles per dollar for 16 months if I spend at least 750 that month.

Chase united: annual fee refund

Chase Continental: $100 statement credit (annual fee was only $85)

Amex premier gold: either $100 refund (out of $175) or 15,000 MR points. I took the latter.

weird thing is that on the SPG personnel card - where I do most of my spending, they offered me nothing. so I just closed.

My question is, does the thing with Chase - about moving credit from old cards to help get new ones approved, work for amex as well?
Anyone else tried to get refund on Chase United recently?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

Just the number on the back of your card. And have a good shpiel ready. Not gaining from the benefits so you are thinking of cancelling unless...

As a general rule for retention, I never say "I wanna cancel", so they shouldn't just cancel me (some companies do that...), instead say "I am considering cancelling this card", meaning if they want to shut you down they have to get your approval.

do not mean to be a spell check but you did not fix how you spelled problem in your second post if that is why you reposted.

No they do not say that.

The annual fee popped up on my United Mileage Plus card. I called, and they said they can give me 5000 miles. I asked how long it takes for them to post, she said she'll put them on the account now, but it won't post to my united account till the end of the next billing date. I took it.
My question is, I have the United club card, so if I downgrade the card now, to get back my annual fee, will the miles post to my united account because i have another united card? anyone have experience with this?
thanx.
