Topic Wiki

I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

What kind of hope?  And why do they have an incentive to make me a retention offer if I already paid the fee?
bec you have 30 days to downgrade and still get back your money

30 days from when the fee was charged, right?

That's how their system works. You usually get an offer between 13-15 months after the last one

So in my case, there is no way to know if the offer will be worth the annual fee, because I have to pay the annual fee first and will only be eligible for retention 45 days later or so...

ok, i was under the impression from this article that their was no time limit between retention offers.

Quote
here is a misconception that a retention offer will be only given to you if an annual fee is coming up, or you had a card for 11+ months.  This is a myth, you can start getting retention bonuses after you first cycle closes.  That’s right, from personal experience, I’ve had retention bonuses given to me as early as 45 days from my application.

that is obviously old info ( based on the comments here) so i was wondering on a new card when is the earliest you can get a offer especially on a AMEX card

The question is not from when you got your card, but from when you got your last retention offer...

Did you mention anything about the covid 19 situation?

Amex is not willing to waive it.

American Express wouldn't give me anything for the business platinum so I close the card I was wondering if I should try calling back and see if they would give me of attention or wave the fee for reopening it as it's been less than 90 days?

I'm going to try my other cards

Seems to be a new thing with them. It used to be a given that it would be an option.
