I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Hi,
I just got hit with a 65.00 fee from my spg amex...
if im reading the previous posts correctly I should call up and ask the rep for a retention  bonus because I dont want to pay the fee?

Yes, you should ask.  You will most likely be offered 3,000 spg points.

Just spoke with Citi retention last night for an $85 annual fee that showed up.
They offered my a $95 statement credit after 5 purchases within 3 months.
Note, this card is open since 2009 (and never paid a fee for it yet).

I called to cancel platinum since i got the $450 fee and was given the option of 4,000 points or $100 statement credit. I picked the $100 statement credit but could i still cancel to avoid the fee?

Ethically or practically?

You gotta think he was asking practically because ethically he could figure out by himself.

And to that it should work to cancel.

Were you a big spender on your Citi AA card? I've had mine since 2011 and my fee is about to hit. Think I can get them to offer me the same $85 annual fee waived as they did you? Should I wait to call about the fee before it hits, or not until after it hits?

IME I called ahead of time and it didn't hurt... you can try before and if you have no luck, wait until it posts then call and if need be HUCA...

I have the Sapphire Preferred card and the Annual fee is coming up this month. I like the card (DUH) but I also have the Ink Bold so not that much of a need for it (considering I don't travel much) and my IB allows my Freedom Points to move to Airlines...

Anyhow doesn't seem like they offer any special Retention Bonuses, so what would you do in my shoes? Sign up for the SP MC and try to leverage the VISA over? I am certainly worried about an A/A and would really like to avoid it... I know we don't quite have the cause pegged down to the opening of cards necessarily, and it's more likely credit vs reported income and UR transfers to other UR accounts, but what would you suggest? I've currently got 5-6 chase cards open and had a BA that already closed and moved line over...

When was the last time you applied for a Chase card?
