I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Many years ago when I first opened my fidelity brokerage account they had offered the gold card with no annual fee and they reimbursed you for half the fee for the platinum. i never took advantage of the platinum offer but I did get the gold card. I don't think these products are still offered anymore.

Just hit ~1 year for wife and mine AOR, so called in for retention:

Citi AAdvantage Plat: was offered 3500 pts after $1000 spend, or +2 miles/dollar spend (for 3 mile/dollar net) for next 6 months, up to 10K pts max. Took the +2 miles offer, and just got another +2 miles/dollar on gas, groceries, groceries, restaurants until Oct, up to 2500 miles. That's 5 pts/dollar for those categories, ridiculous!! Also found out that I don't actually have to pay the annual fee since I'm a Citigold customer. Thought it was dead, but I just got charged $0 for annual fee.

Chase Sapphire Preferred x2: Nothing on mine, just paid the fee. Downgraded wife's to Freedom (other reps wouldn't let me, but one did!).

Amex PRG x2: 10K pts right away, 7.5K more after $1500 in 3 months. Practically pays for the fee, nice!

That's great.  I had no luck when I tried.

Yeah, I called about 5x about my card, but they'd only let me downgrade to the Sapphire. Since we don't have a Freedom, worked out perfectly! So easy to transfer points to my UR acct... and we still keep the same "usage" since we'll just make AUs on each other's accts

Seems like Chase tells most everyone to get bent when they ask for a SP retention bonus

The last month and a half...I had to call a couple of times. i was also calling about my other cards, which they were unable to offer anything ao they felt bad so they worked something out for the Sapphire.
Normally I think offers pop up on the account. I do not think that they pop up on cards that earn UR pts, they just have the ability to adjust if need be.

so it's a regular amex gold charge card? earning MR points? then yes, it should theoretically hold the points

Data point/success story;

Just got hit with the annual fee on my MP cc (CO OPP) . For some reason the option to downgrade wasn't showing on my account.  I called a bunch of times asking if they could waive the fee, but they refused.

I spoke to a supervisor that promised me he would do research as to why my account isn't eligible to be downgraded.

He called me back two days later and left a message.  He said its due to compliance reasons,  but since he doesn't really understand the reasoning,  he's going to waive the $85 fee!

I just hit the one year mark on my wife's Citi AA Platinum.

I called them up and one rep offered me an additional 4 AA miles per dollar spent up to 20,000 bonus AA miles for the next 6 months. Then we got an offer for an additional 2 miles per dollar on three categories, up to 2,500 bonus miles.

Effectively, for the next $1,250 that's 7 miles per dollar and 5 miles per dollar for the following $3,750 for a grand total of 27,500 miles on $5,000 spent.

Not too shabby! :D
