Topic Wiki

I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Same as me. I only spend $10 a month on that card. I wonder why they gave me such a nice retention offer?

This is not quite a retention bonus (since I do that around January), but ....  I called Amex to replace my worn out Starwood card.  As usual, the rep says something about my history, and that since I'm a valued cardholder, she'd be happy to send it out overnight. I respond that I couldn't care less if it's overnighted, but I would appreciate some bonus SPG points since I'm such a "valued cardholdre".  Rep respond, sure I'd be happy to give you 1,500 points.

not sure if this is the right place for this question but has anyone ever tried to get some compensation (points/miles) for when a card was closed due to fraud? Its kind've an inconvenience for me not to be able to use the card for a day as well as transfer some automatic payments to a new card.  I know it isnt the cc companies fault that there was fraud (I dont know who exactly is at fault , maybe a vendor I used my card at?) but was wondering if I may get some compensation anyway or am I asking for too much.

No such thing.  Go ahead and ask.  Explain how inconvenient it was.  Worst case scenario is they say no.  They'll probably give you the points without a fuss.

I know I can ask but was wondering if anyone has had any experience with asking for compensation for such a thing.

Honestly, I'd be embarrassed to ask for compensation in that case.

Why should they compensate you? (Yes, if you ask, they may anyway, but that doesn't mean you should.)

I'm not sure I should be embarrased but one of the reasons I was asking was to get a feel for if ppl felt it would be wrong to ask for compensation for this reason. So I guess you think it is wrong

Yes, personally, I do.

Care to share why you think you should be compensated? I'm always open to being persuaded.

I dont necessarily think I should be, but when the Chase fraud rep kept apologizing to me for this inconvenience I had a thought that I should ask her for compensation but I didnt.  Then after getting off the phone I thought maybe I should have and then wanted to know if anyone has ever done this.

Got shot down on my Citi AmEx for waiver of the $85.

Will have to try one more time.

Anyone been successful recently?

What exactly do you mean you "got shot down" because of a waiver fee of $85??

Please explain, Thanks!

I am pretty sure that he is saying he was denied when he asked for them to waive his annual fee of $85

I think that if you were genuinely annoyed by the whole thing, and if getting bonus points will make you a happy customer, you should ask.  Chase wants to keep customers happy and would probably be willing to compensate you to keep you that way.

+1

No success stories recently (within last 2 weeks?)

I think that if you were genuinely annoyed by the whole thing, and if getting bonus points will make you a happy customer, you should ask.  Chase wants to keep customers happy and would probably be willing to compensate you to keep you that way.

Again, just because they might/will, doesn't mean one should ask. And, again, why should Chase compensate a person for a fraud interruption?
