I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

AJK, I answered your question before.  It has nothing to do with the fraud interruption really.  It has everything to do with making him a happy customer.  They call it "goodwill points" for a reason (at least, that's what starwood calls it).

You might as well ask your cell phone company for a goodwill credit (to make you happy) for the same credit card fraud interruption because they are about as much to blame for your credit card (number) being stolen as is the credit card company itself.

Put differently, you might as well ask the credit card company for goodwill points because your wife burned your toast this morning.

+1

No success stories recently (within last 2 weeks?)

I did it about a month ago. Instead of asking for the fee to be waived I said I was thinking of cancelling because of the fee and if there was anything they could do. On 2 of my wife's cards I had to do 5 transactions and then got a $95 credit (for an $85 annual fee) on my card I got a goodwill credit or something like that for $85.

Have PRG and two SPG. Called AMEX to ask for a retention bonus. They absolutely refuse to budge on any of them. Nada. Zip. Any ideas?

The difference is that he didn't lose cell phone access.  He lost access to his credit card, and the bank did not have a solution that would give him access to his credit account the same day or next day.  That's not convenient, and inconvenience does not make customers happy.

Put differently, you might as well ask the credit card company for goodwill points because your wife burned your toast this morning.

I just might do that!  Thanks for the idea!

We'll agree to disagree.

Thanks for the data point. I'll give it another go.

You have to get transferred over to the retention dept. a regular CSR can't do anything for you.

And here is the response:
Dear Yehuda S,

I do appreciate the fact that you have been using the Card quite extensively.

While I understand your position concerning this matter, we are unable to waive the Membership Fee or provide any retention bonus as the annual fee supports a variety of benefits and services.

However, if the only thing standing between you and membership is the fee of $175.00, we have a variety of below Cards that have lower annual membership fee:

- Gold Senior Member Card :   Annual Membership Fee $55.00
- American Express Traditional Gold Card :   Annual Membership Fee $85.00

I noticed the $175 fee for the year on my amex gold card and i called them complained they said gave me 2 options: 1- either i can get $50 now and $50 after i spend $500 within the next 60 days which would make the fee $75 altogether. 2- they will give me 7500 points now and 5000 after i spend $500 during the next 60 days.
I took the points because they worth more.
