It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

And, now I realized why I got shot down.

I got the retention on this card 6 months ago  :-[

That's why there was no offer on their system. I guess you can't get two retentions in one year :P
I just called and there was nothing on the table for me!
I hope you are very wrong!
I know it definitely was not like that in the past!
I got two retentions in the beginning of 2012  8)

Waiting on 5k Hyatt points to post. Called to have the fee waived over this past weekend, speaking to the rep she explained the benefits of the cards and why the fee isnt so bad :) I told her no way so she gave me 5k points. She mentioned that on the 14th I start the new billing cycle so if i was to cancel now I would have lost all of my earned points. She continued by telling me I now have 5K points and that after the 14th if I decide to cancel they would, and I still keep the 5k points.

My thoughts are to call back just after that, tell them I want to cancel because of the fee. Maybe they will offer more points or cancel. If they cancel I am planning on asking for a xfer of the credit limit. Then I will reapply for the card hopefully receiving the 2 nights again while I am a diamond. If I reapply should I do so with a new GP number and will Hyatt merge my 2 accounts?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
S

My personal Amex Platinum and PRG Annual fees are due today.
I'm thinking of downgrading the Platinum to Zync and squeeze a retention bonus for the gold.

The problem, I barely used either of the cards which are 1 year old (spent about $1500 on the gold this iy year).

Do I have a shot of any retention bonus for the gold?

P.S. off topic, since I'm about to downgrade the platinum to Zync, which programs do I need to ask for elite status before closing? I'm aware of priority club and National/Alamo. What else?

As mentioned, the annual fee for my PRG and Platinum are due today.

I called in the number in the back of the gold card and navigated to "cancel card". The rep was like okay so let's cancel.. I asked her maybe u could offer some MR points to make it worth to keep the Gold open and she said she can't offer anything and she transferred me to "Membership Rewards" saying that they might be able to..
The guy at Membership Rewards said they don't have the capability to offer any courtesy points and the only thing he can do is redeem my MR points towards the annual fee which is absolutely not worth it (about 30k MR Points for the gold and about 75k MR points for the Platinum).
So I said I'll think about it and call back..

Question, is there a special Amex retention dept that does have the authority of offering MR points and if so whats the number?

Maybe try calling again playing dumb and say something like, "I'm not sure it's worth the annual fee to keep the Gold open."

You were too blatant with the, "Maybe you can offer me some MR to keep it open." Also they never waive the fee for the Platinum cards, so just cancel that one.

Why would someone cancel the platinum over downgrading it?

Why would someone cancel the platinum over downgrading it?

Being on my second Amex Platinum, how many times might they allow me to downgrade the Platinum?  I already have the Zinc; is there a reason to have more than one Zinc?  Since there is no credit line with the Plat, we're not talking about transferring the credit over to the new card when downgrading.

Why wouldn't someone cancel it (assuming you have another card to keep your MR alive)?

Called to cancel my amex platinum.  Explained that I have cut back on CC spending and travel and dont really need this card.  i am putting $300-$500 on it per month and definitely not worth $450 AF.
They offered a $400 credit, I said that I have decided not to pay for a credit card- not even $50.  SO she offered 50,000 points instead and said I could use 45,000 of them to pay my AF.  I took the points, I assume it's not worth using them to pay my fee?  How much can I sell them for?
BTW, I wasn't playing games, this was all true and I was genuinely surprised.

You can sell the points for 1.3+ cents per point. See the SellMilesNow banner at the top of DansDeals.com

Nicely done. How long ago did you get the card? Did you get a signup bonus? How much did you spend?
