Topic Wiki

I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

With citi I was previously offered miles to keep open. Now I got the Annual fee waived for another year on several cards. Whats funny is I didn't have any spending on those cards but they still seemed desperate to keep me...

I just got 2,500 points from Diners Club for keeping my account open.
Just decided to call their retentions department out of the blue at 800-753-5577 and they offered that right away!

My free year just finished, and they no longer consolidate or switch cards, so I spoke to the retention department, and was given an offer of making 5 charges in the next 3 months, and getting an $85 statement credit.

That's a great offer.

My record:
5/2009: PremierPass Elite 2 bonus TYPs/$ [this equates to 6 TYP/$ with the airline pt matching] for 6 months
11/2009: Called again for the promo, they said no
3/2010: Got the same promo again for 6 months
Yesterday: Cancelled an AA amex, nada
Yesterday 5 minutes later: Called to cancel an AA MC, gave me 5K miles to think it over. It's either random or perhaps I spent a bit more on my MC...

Thanks so much Dan for the idea never knew that it can work with AMEX.
I Just called and the rep. said there is nothing he can do I asked to speak to his supervisor she also did nothing, called back a second time my luck got the same guy I asked him some stupid question and hung up, called back couple of hours later and the rep. finally offered me 3000 points, then he noticed all the notes on my account and that the previous supervisor did not ok it but he said that he transferred the points already so to late! Nice and thanks again

Im talking specifically about the Amex Delta "Gold"card.
I already called a few times and even spoke to supervisor and being very nice telling them im a loyal customer since 2005 but nothing seems to work.
Since it has different benefits it seems they arent giving any bonuses or willing to waive the $95 yearly fee

I have it for almost a year (11 months and change) and I've put approx. 3300 on it (with 2500 of those being from Discover teen card :D)
