I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

It looks like Chase is following Citi's footsteps.
Just called about the IB and got an offer for 10K bonus UR after $5k spend in 3 months.
Needless to say, I took it.

I don't understand these bonuses! We will wave your fee if you allow us to give you 15K UR on your next 5K spend as long as it is done within 3 months, deal?
Why not just wave the fee?

10K points costs them maybe $50 and you pay AF and they earn on the $5 K spend . Not points plus waived fee, if I understood correctly

10k UR is worth $100 in chases book.

The IB is a charge card and must be paid in full every month, so no interest for them to make money on.

It's worth $100 in their book , but I think it costs them a lot less . They make money on the $5 K from the merchants regardless of customers not paying interest @ 2- 3 % I believe.

Just a thought on my part, to understand why they do it . Plus they hope you keep on spending after the $5K

But 10K bonus + 5K regular spend = 15K for the next $5K, which means they are not only waiving the fee but also giving 3x on the next 5K in spend. Why does this make business sense?

@Redbull . Maybe I misunderstood but I thought Chase was not waiving fee but offering
the points to keep card open, and pay fee ?

Did Txtmax4 say he got both ?

You may be right and that would make much more sense.

I actually paid it already last week. I was flying on AA using Avios out of LGA Sunday night. And flashing the card didn't work like it did in the past. So I told them I have no use for it, if it doesn't get me the free bags and I don't plan on traveling much this coming year.

Make the most of annual fees?
« Reply #1158 on: January 09, 2013, 11:43:59 AM »
I searched but did not find any threads discussing this. I was wondering if anyone could post their experiences in making the most of annual fees, i.e. which banks might waive the fee, which banks might give you a retention bonus or which cards are not worth keeping and just transferring to another card?
For example, from what I've read the sapphire preferred card is worth keeping in order to maintain access to the better ultimate rewards system.

Thanks all!!
