I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

i dont have another chase card to transfer the CL to. (its just a 1500 CL)
can I just donwgrade? or I can't cuz I didn't have the card for a year yet?

UMPE has best signup bonus, that's why I want it again. I'm only doing all this for the signup bonus. I don't put so much spend on cards that I care for all the benefits. I put most of my purchases on my amex blue cash.  and I am planning on doing a 2 or 3 BM - UMPE + CSP + Freedom (probably)

but I just first needa cancel or donwgrade my existing card.
Why are you putting most of your purchases on a blue cash card?  :'(
And why do you need to cancel your existing card to apply for new ones?  ???

I would just leave it and use it for leverage.
I hear, but I rly want the 55k +$50
I'll call and ask again abt downgrading. if not, I'll just sm to close, and its just a 1500 CL I'm losing

Thanks for all your input guys!

Up to you but MEIR613 and I both dont suggest that.

What do you plan on doing with the sign up bonus?

like i said, I don't have that much spend - mostly use my parents c.c. - so I like amex cuz it has best protections, and blue cash everyday has no AF. In terms of specific point bonuses in different categories of each card, doesn't make that much difference to me cuz not much spend. I'd rather know I'm protected on all my purchases, w/o having to pay AFs.

any other cards I open are purely for signup bonuses. which is why I want the UMPE. so thats why i needa cancel the existing one.

I wouldn't close it. You will need it for leverage.

I rly just do it for the money - don't travel much. would sell the 55k for abt $750 and then make another $50 on statement credit.
I defintely hear you that i shouldn't close so I can use it as leverage to apply for other cards. maybe I'll wait a another month until it's a year, and then downgrade.

Thanks!

Go for the IB and IP. That will get you 110k UR points which are much more valuable than a 55k united account.

Can even throw in a UA Biz (50K+$50) at no extra pull=nothing lost.

What about 50K Ink cards?
those are all business cards so would be a separate pull. and i don't want to have to start lying on the phone abt a business that doesn't exist... and i hear they're not so easy to get approved to on the spot. and those have a high minimum spend (and don't go telling me abt AP and bluebird - i know all abt it!!) just don't want to get so involved.

He doesn't sound like he wants to play the big leagues.
I guess you can call it that  ;)

And the OP will get what he wanted!

But it might take some time on phone to get those three approved after having one UA card less than a year open with a 1500 CL.

A separate pull from what? I haven't been reading closely, but you have a UA and want to close it to get a UA? That's a bad strategy.

He def. should go for it but, with only a UA card with a $1500 CL he will have a hard enough time getting 1 ink card, let alone 2 inks and a UA biz.

i def understand you all!
the 3BM business is a good idea except i'll have a hard time getting approved for all, and quite frankly im not that interested in lying too much over the phone.

and just wanted you to understand my general situtation - doing most of this for the signup bonuses.

but you definitely convinced me to keep the ua card open

THanks all! gnite!

Not sure if this is a stupid q or not. But y wud someone ever get to a point where they have to pay an AF with the sp,inks or ua. Don't you guys cancel the card within a few months after getting the points?
