It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

As per the T&C of the card that you have agreed upon applying for it that they charge you the annual fee.
the guy told me 'it is clearly not a annual fee waive rather its a incentive to keep the card'.

AF waived on my Citi Amex, plus a bonus 500 miles each month I spend $500 for the next 16 months. I didn't even ask for a retention bonus, just called and asked when my annual fee is due and the guy offered it to me.

And now I got the AF waived on my Citi Visa, plus a bonus 750 miles each month I spend $750 for the next 16 months. This time I did need to say I was cancelling.

Did you use these cards besides hitting initial signup bonus?

After 3 HUCA with Chase they would not waive the UA $85 Annual fee, but did offer 5K miles instead.

I tried HUCA three times for my sapphire preferred visa, they won't waive the fee or offer any bonus points.  :(
I even offered to add a user to the account to increase usage, and made clear I am contemplating closing the card, to no avail. Is there a chance a SM might work better? Can I still keep calling after I SM?
Please help!  :'(

Why don't you downgrade the card and then reapply for the card to get the bonus again?

I actually tried this morning regarding the BA annual Fee. They offered a 9k avios bonus after spending $1500 in 3 months. I dont know if that is a great deal so I am planning on closing the card, getting my $95 returned, transferring the credit line to my Sapphire Pref. and getting a United Club card or Amex Plat.
I am not 100% sure about this. But I am going to click it anyway.

You have 60 days from when the fee hits.. to cancel and get the fee refunded.. so if you can.. I'd spend the 1500 quickly before the fist statement closes and the points post.... and then cancel the card want the points transfer out.
