I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

So how many miles/points did YOU buy with your annual fee?
« Reply #161 on: April 05, 2011, 05:04:23 PM »
Post here your experience with your credit card company when calling in to try to take off (or get something in exchange of) your annual fee:

Just got off the phone with starwood  :D, told the rep. that I've given them a very substantial amount of business this past year, and that "a friend told me that they take off the annual fee for something like that". Obviously she said she cannot do it but she can offer me some Starpoints as appreciation. Puts me on hold and when she comes back on the line she announces that she gave me 3,000 points. to make it short, I said that won't cut it, escalated the call and got 5,000 additional (total of 8,000) points from the supervisor. I'm a happy camper today.
BH, this year I was lucky, got it on the first try and under 5 minutes on the phone.
Last year I got just 4,000 points from them.

Also my recent experience with Citi, they offered me 10.000 miles if I spend $5000 within 6 months (swiped $5000 a day later).

or chase BA card

I got a 5,000 mile bonus from Chase, when my $75 fee was charged on Feb 1, to keep the account open. I called again and was told you have 60 days from when my fee was charged to have it reversed if you close the account.

I got the bonus and closed the account 60 days later

Just got the typical offer from Citi to waive the annual fee if I make 5 transactions within three months. Looks like I'll be squeezing a few more drops of gas soon... of course they don't call it waiving the fee, but rather an $85 credit after I swipe five times. Funny thing is I opened this card in '09 and got the annual fee waived the same way last year.

You didn't even have to ask? Nice.

I basically told them the annual fee wasn't worth it for me and asked if they can do anything other then canceling my card (AA World Plat). They then offered the above.

So I called to cancel my AA CitiBus card in preparation of trying for another round and was offered 10,000 bonus miles after spending $5,000.  I'm trying to meet spending thresholds on several other cards so not sure if this is worth it.  And I would like to try to get another Citi card or two.

That's not a bad offer, though hard to meet if (like me) you're also doing a few Amex charge cards, BA 100k and Citi AA 75k at the same time.

I got the same offer. Swiped the next day. Statement closed, but the miles were nowhere to be seen.
Called them up and they said I have to wait till the 6 months are up. Chutzpah!
I'm working now with a supervisor to try and get them quicker..

6 months :o that's just wrong. They're essentially forcing you to keep it open if you want to get the bonus. :(

Well technically I don't mind keeping it open since I'll still have another 6 months to close it by the time I get them miles, but the chutzpah is that the spend is within 6 months and the first day of the offer (which is when I swiped) was in that time frame, so I should be awarded the miles since I met the requirement.

That's what I'm saying. I have no issue with them requiring you to keep the account open for six months. Maing you wait six months for the miles to post is ridiculous.

I guess we have to start asking them straight out when they make an offer, how long will it take to get the bonus.

Today I got a $100 credit for keeping my Continental Chase card- so that's going towards the $85 yearly fee and I made $15!

Was there a mileage/money choice?

+1, if they offered me that I'd always try to get 10k miles or something.

Opened my Continental Onepass Plus in Feb. complained about the annual fee eventhough that I will be receiving it in about 9 months, they gave me and my wifes account 5K miles.

Amex Premier Rewards Gold received annual fee $175 they offered me 7500 MR Points, However my wife was not offered bec. she hardly used the card.

I'm sure you could, it all depends on how many phone calls you're prepared to make and what you're going to say to them.
