Topic Wiki

I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Wow! I just got off the phone with Barclays regarding my US Airways Card, I asked them to waive my annual fee, so after transferring me to Retention, this really nice woman offered me the annual fee waived, a $2,000 Credit line increase (She Promised they wouldn't look on my credit report, I guess I'll find out soon enough ???), and 5,000 Miles after spending $1,000 in the next 3 months.

Now all this is after spending less then $1,500 throught the whole year (Including $750 I spent for the targeted offer for 15,000 Miles)

I have to say that I expected nothing from Barclays when I first called but I'm really shocked
Awesome
If you have any questions please search and then ask. PM me for detailed help.

Anyone had any luck getting any retention bonuses on the United Explorer? I called 4 times (the 3rd time was the same person as the 2nd so I hung up) and they all said there was nothing available for me.  I ended up downgrading to the United Mileage Plus Rewards card (which is pretty crappy).

I guess I'll just have to churn the United Explorer again.

Also, they all said they were trained in retention and wouldn't be able to transfer me to the retention department. Is that a new thing?

I had the exact same experience!  (Without getting the same rep twice....)
& I also ended up downgrading.

About a month after he applied, he was likely spending more on the card regularly (to meet the threshold). I haven't really used the card for more than a few bucks since 2 months after I got it a year ago. Those aren't really comparable situations.

Closed it. No need to keep it open. I rather rack up MR and when i need to transfer. or sell at a higher rate.
I hear this is churnable too. So maybe best to close and open again later. By the way, which AMEX cards do you have that rack up the MRs/Starpoints? Also, any techniques to do so? I'd appreciate the info. URs are easy to make, but haven't had a chance to learn how to make MRs/Starpoints efficiently. I already have a plat, PRG, BGR, DL, SPG, and SPG biz if that helps.

Just called in for my Chase Bold, $95 fee posted. Right away she said she saw a $95 credit that can be applied to my account.

Took care of that. Total call time was 2 minutes. Pre-Shabbat Present

United MPE - Haven't spent much since getting the 55k bonus, open for about a year, was offered 2 Club passes.  No other offer available, so I accepted it.  Will probably end up closing it down at recon during my next AOR.

Anyone had any luck getting any retention bonuses on the United Explorer?

A year ago I asked to close my card, they asked why and I said it's because the sapphire preferred gets me everything that the explorer would have gotten me (and my status gets me the free bag). They offered me a $100 credit to keep the card open. Since the annual fee was $95, I kept it and made a $5 profit, along with the two new club passes.

Not sure what's gonna happen this year.

Called Citi to close AAdvantage card because the annual fee hit. I asked for some incentive to keep it open or something to offset the fee, but the CSR swiftly closed the account without offering anything. I don't think I made any purchases in the last year.
