I have continental miles enough for 2 one way tickets from Montreal to Cleveland I'm getting hit with a $257 surcharge, is there any way out of it.
Continental doesn't charge a fuel surcharge.
They do charge a fee for booking an award ticket within 21 days and there's no easy way out of that unless you're elite.

It's a close-in fee, not a fuel surcharge which is what this thread is about.

Not sure exactly what you mean...

It's a close-in fee, not a fuel surcharge which is what this thread is about.
So any tips on getting the close-in fee removed as a non elite?

I'm just saying IME they are the easiest to deal with in these situation. Try and think of a good reason why you shouldn't be charged, and see if they'll listen

Update on Delta.
They do charge a fuel surcharge on certain partners, V Australia for one.

The foreign origination tax is not a fuel surcharge but rather an extra tax so if you fly a partner which has YQ you'll be charged the foreign origination tax IN ADDITION to the YQ.

(Shame about V Australia, really was the easiest/best value of skypesos...)

Oddly enough, they only collect large fees on VA when flying out of the USA. If you start in Oz the fees are around $120.00 total
