1) would book an early am flight, but agree there is a risk.
3) with your revised option 3, I'd risk AA cancelling the ticket as a duplicate. I could also make it simpler by catching a non-stop lga-DCA as part of the same award. Also don't have enough miles in the account to hold down another F award x2. I suppose I could get creative by asking AA to route me JJ JFK-YYZ on Sunday (there's award space), then YYZ-DCA on Monday.

If you book LGA-DCA you won't be able to change to JFK-AUH.

True (but was operating under the assumption that this would be a backup reservation in case the JFK-AUH flight doesnt open in F on the existing reservation).

I've done the whole Mrs. AJK in higher cabin than me (though not intentionally), and while not terrible, was not nearly as fun.
Loved that trip report. Though at least here, we'd both be in premium cabins on at least the long-haul (and could dine together etc. in the onboard lounge (and unofficially in the the booked Apt., but that seems to be YMMV)).

How crazy would a trip to MLE be with an infant?

+1

DW and I were just discussing how difficult the traveling would be with an infant. Waiting for seaplane/domestic flight plus the flight itself and the speedboat would not be easy.

So don't do the far out resorts. There are plenty of ones a short distance out.

close ones tend not to be as nice from what I've read, and are still a pain to get to, particularly if traveling from North America.

They are still absolutely beautiful. And no more of a pain then getting to MLE

1 For us, though, I'd absolutely do option 3 and hope A380 opened, allowing free change even after 3/22.  However, for you, considering how arduous the trip is already, I ain't about to recommend NYC-ANOTHER STOP-IAD-AUH-MLE. I'd book a non-stop cash ticket from NYC-IAD and lock you both in F now. Problem with doing that, of course, is no A380 and no possibility to change. But thems the breaks when you didn't lock it down originally :P
Now see space on JFK-DCA and 2 in F is still a possibility on IAD-AUH. Should I switch now so we're both in F on the same flight, or hang tight with my J and F seats and hold out hope that one more F seat opens (4 in Freedom remain) out of JFK?

If I land in MLE at 10:00 PM, can I still get to the islands that night, or do I have to wait till the morning ?

Would either be Hyatt, or Conrad. Guess I can check their websites, to see which ones will work.

You can ask the W hotel. Basically I would assume that any hotel offering a speedboat transfer from the airport probably owns their own boat so they could do odd time pickups.

Also, there is a Sheraton super close to the airport but I know nothing about the actual hotel or island.

I have the 25K extra points in the account to pay the upgrade post March 21, 2016 for this one segment and, as much as I'd rather use those miles for something else,  if space doesn't open on the 380, I can't say I would prefer to take the later flight out of IAD with two seats in F over the F/J arrangement on the 380 out of JFK. Thus, query whether worthwhile to keep the existing booking and only be on the hunt for one more F seat instead of 2.
