It kind of makes me want to MS HHilton points. Last time was in the Maldives was soo expensive. Well the OWB upgrade and all the scuba diving plus the seaplane and a massage it came out to be way more than if I MS 1.3 mil HHonors points... lol. How often is this auction around?

That's a lot of MS but the last one was in May so hopefully they'll keep doing it twice a year and you've got time to get to work!  :P

From SR MLE:

Quote
With regards to your concern about the Zika virus, the Ministry of Health has assured the public that there has been no confirmation of the presence of Zika virus in the Maldives. Also, our island is located far from the main land and does not mix up with the local community.
We also do fogging to kill the mosquitos & insects twice a day and provide mosquito sprays and repellents in the Villa as well.

Very comforting!

It WAS comforting!  They spray the heck out of the islands each night (we could smell it one night walking back to the beach villa which was gross yet reassuring).  Didn't see one mosquito or get a single bite.  Just don't tour any nearby islands.  Also in Singapore I believe Zika was only confirmed in one place amongst a few foreign workers that all lived in the same communal housing.

Makes me want to cry. Cancelling whatever legs I had booked.

I truly hope you didn't/don't cancel a trip to the Maldives because of Zika.

#1 You two are discussing 2 different hotels/islands lol
#2 Care to explain why? I trust the CDC to say it's not advisable to visit MLE more than an MLE hotel/gov. official (who obviously wants tourists) to say that it's safe.

Have you done any research?

From what I've seen there was a *single* case of Zika more than a year ago and that person may not have even been bitten in MLE.

Either way, if you're that concerned with MLE, then I hope you're not considering BOB...

My research consisted of reading the news articles that day that 11 countries were added to the list and reviewing the CDC site about MLE. Nope, no BOB either. Gonna be something like CA/AZ/HI for the next trip.

I'm not at all belittling your fears but I think they are unfounded.  The Maldives is listed by the WHO as having eradicated Malaria, which is not an easy task for a tropical country to do.  The reason people can speak to different islands (St. Regis or Conrad, etc.) is because in addition to the government efforts all of these high end hotels appear to have intensive in house programs to eliminate mosquitos, if for no other reason than to reduce the nuisance factor for guests.  I grew up in Asia and there are plenty of popular places I wouldn't take my kids but I would love to bring my children on my next trip to the Maldives (to an island hotel, not Male or any local islands) because it is such a secure, totally curated experience, where the hotels do manage every aspect of your transfers and stay (in a good way), including killing all the mosquitos on the islands! ;)
