why not
He's probably referring to either:
1) I don't want to fly Arab airlines, which basically knocks off MLE.
2) I don't want to pay $1000 for the last leg, which basically knocks off both places.

ETA: Nice! I was right!

Wow, that's crazy. (Not saying you did something wrong.) It's just a pity to use points to fly all these wonderful routes and then have to take a quick flight for $500. Is that RT or each way?

It only sounds crazy because you're viewing it from the wrong perspective. Instead of thinking of it as a flight, think of it as a very expensive cab ride to your hotel. If you fly to Switzerland for "free" (I.e. points) but have to spend $100 getting from your house to the airport, and another $200 for a cab to get from ZRH to your paradise in the Alps, it doesn't seem so strange, does it? Yes, expensive, but doesn't strike you as "crazy" and "unheard of", right? I mean, airport transfers cost money, sometimes a lot of money...

So think of this as a REALLY intense cab ride. :D

There likely are, but it seems like ppl have a notion that they only amazing reefs are in you fly out for 30 minutes.
Perhaps they've tried out both and they're right.

Maldives is one of the places I agree to: if you have to ask how much it costs you can't afford it

It's expensive, you can't go buy drinks in walmart, the resorts have no competition for all the extras, like dives, cruises, drinks.... you will have to pay what they charge

If you are stretching your budget to get there and will not be able to enjoy a coktail without thinking twice, maybe wait still a little to go there

That's a pretty fallacious remark.  Asking how much it costs, doesn't necessarily mean one cannot afford it.  Some people like to inquire, prepare, and save money while enjoying rather than splurging.  Isn't that why we're all on here?
FYI, after reading TRs here and FT, I booked for 6 nights in Feb, and we plan to do many activities when there.  Also, we are bringing trek mix and protein bars for mini-snacks as we eat small meals every 2-3 hours.  We plan on eating breakfast and early dinner, and of course, enjoy many cocktails.  There is no "budget."  We are just looking to stretch our dollar.

+1... No need to pay for something that can be gotten for free... That is what DDF is all about

Uhh, yes, I do understand that.
"Both" was referring to speedboat distance and flying distance.
