Just in case people aren't aware, there are Water Villa's and then there are Retreat Villas/Superior Water Villa's. The Water Villa's are OWB, but not what most people think they are. These are not the rooms branching off a long pier, rather they are OWB connected to the beach with a small walkway. While technically it is OWB, depending on tide, it may only be a few feet into the water (based on my initial observations).

To upgrade from the standard room you get booked into, it will cost on the low low end ~$150 a night and likely to be in the mid $200's. To upgrade to the Retreat or Superior OWB's which are the ones everyone thinks about when they see pictures, go for upwards of $400 a night.

Personally, considering how nice this Deluxe Beach Villa is (I got upgraded), I am strongly considering canceling one of my nights in the Water Villa and go scuba diving a second time.

Those aren't luxury OWBs like you can have in BOB/MLE, but good to know nonetheless.
Per the website:

It’s important to realize that this is a simple, and isolated, eco-lodge without the five-star amenities. Those who come expecting modern luxury bungalows seem to be unhappy, but those open to the simple concept of this resort seem to really love it.

Thanks for the tip, that's great that you got the free upgrade to a DBV.  Did they confirm that ahead or just tell you when you got there?  I think I'm also just going to upgrade for 2 nights but do a higher end OWB.  How was the seaplane transfer?  Have they been helpful storing and heating your food?  Do you have options for kosher food and/or wine from Australia? TIA

They told us when we got here.
The seaplane transfer was fine and took about 30 minutes.
They took our bag when we landed and put it in the freezer. We made a list and schedule of our meals and gave it to them. No issues at all.
I did not ask about other food or wine.

Thanks for the tips:

1. Are you paying 95K HH per night?.

2. Are the standard room is that  the Beach Villa?.

He booked the standard beach villa but said he got upgraded to the 3200sqft Deluxe beach villa.   If you don't want to stay Shabbos (arrive Sunday and leave late Thurs. night) and you have the Hilton Amex can book an Axon 4 night award for 300k.  Not really cheaper per night 75k vs 76k but less total points and don't need to stay the five nights.

I had our island hostess show us what the water villa looked like before our planned move. After seeing the villa and it's size, we decided to skip the water villa completely and stay in our spacious deluxe beach villa. While I know it is almost sacrilegious to go to MLE and not stay in an OWB. We were not interested in paying the higher upgrade fee for the next class of villas and felt the regular water villa was too small and the water around it was not good for snorkeling.

I wonder how that would compare to the PH OWB?!!!

Again thanks for the tips.

Can't speak for the PH, but the W beach villas were nowhere near the same ballpark as the OWBs. Being OW is just magical.

As I mentioned in a different post, the standard WV's were ~ 15-20 feet off the beach and standing in ~2-3 feet of water. For me, being in that much water wouldn't have been so magical. For those that are willing to upgrade to a higher category room, it will be amazing.

Personally, this just gives me an excuse to get to BOB and just book into an OWB.

Usually at the property you can upgrade for a lot less than advance quotations...or free if you work it right.

If you hadn't gotten that free upgrade to an awesome deluxe beach villa though, would you be more willing to pay for the OWB upgrade?  I think you're just confirming that we'll only do two of five nights in and OWB but I am willing to pay for a Deluxe OWB for just a couple nights...we're going in the off season where it seems the upgrade fees are about half what they're offering you...

Absolutely. We were going to be paying for the upgrade on our last two nights, but after seeing the room, we decided to stay where we are.

True, we are here during the second highest time of the year. IF the quotes were cheaper, we would definitely be more willing to consider other options.
