The Maldives: Paradise for jihadists?
"Many Western tourists don’t even know that this is a Muslim country. But in fact, outside of the Arab world, the Maldives have the highest number of fighters among ISIS's ranks per capita: 200, more or less, out of 400,000 inhabitants. The government denies it. But each and every resident likely has a brother or cousin in Syria. While the rest of the world was watching the Olympics in August, everyone here was watching the battle of Aleppo. And rooting for al-Qaeda."

Using those statistics, there's a decent chance davidmal and I also have cousins fighting in Syria...

Rofl...although seriously I did feel like I was in Jihadi land at the MLE airport until you get to the Hotel lounge.  Thankfully it's only about 10 minutes until you get to the Conrad (or SR or wherever) cacoon and you stay in until you leave again (our hotel rep literally escorted us all the way to customs)!

The article makes the case why you should avoid overnighting at MLE at all costs.

Dan,  am surprised you took the Male city tour while you were out there...

True...

I would not want to be there overnight, though probably safer than Germany or France lol

+1 although in Male's defense it doesn't have migrant tent cities in addition to Jihads so I'd def choose there over Paris. :P

If you ask Mrs. AJK, the Male tour was one of her favorite parts of our trip last month.

I was there in 09' and I sat on the plane from MLE with a State Dept guy sent there to help the Maldivian Government fight extremism at home and abroad (at the time they were going to Iraq to fight the US)

That's more of a technicality, due to Shiite  Sunni. And because 99% of that is in 3 countries where we aren't visiting.

I know someone that did, and I almost did until the OWBs were booked up last minute and there were no vacancies. But were Diamond accounts.
