I personally find it mind-boggling how many people avoid(ed) MIA due to a tiny chance of getting Zika, but will travel to MLE despite it being a state-sponsor of terrorism with virtually zero way to protect against an insurgent terrorist group holding a hotel hostage.

When you travel to the Maldives you don’t stay in the tiny island of MLE. Frankly, unless you want to you won’t even step on their island. The airport is a separate island and when you land you either go by boat or seaplane to your hotel for the remainder of your stay.

IME the island of MLE itself was fine and I felt completely safe walking around it ( it takes 45 minutes to walk around the whole island). Will speak more about it in my upcoming TR.

This is only my anecdotal feeling but I didn’t feel that the Conrad was unsafe or vulnerable. I personally felt that the lifeguards and a number of other staff were probably current or former special ops guys and that they for sure have plans for any kind of situation. I personally wouldn’t go to Male  (like I wouldn’t go to East Jerusalem) but I’d stay at the Corad again (just like I’d stay at WAJ). And yes you are isolated but on the flip side they would see any boats or planes coming ahead of time!

The mentality is probably similar to 2 people who find themselves being chased by a lion. One starts to run and the other one asks him, do you really think you can outrun a lion, to which he replies, no, I only have to outrun you.

Should there be an attack on one of the hotels, they would probably attack one of the closer ones, not one that necessitates a seaplane

My point was more an observation. Many vacation places have risks. Either a Traveller cares about these small risks, or doesn't. However, I don't see how a tiny change of zika in Florida stopped so many people from going, but people will happily go to a country with legitimate terror risks.

I’m there with you about Zika. It’s moved into Hysteria territory, especially when people
Don’t discount a good number of locations where cases frankly were not even from mosquitos but spread essentially as an STD.

Now you're judging what they do behind closed doors?

Only if something like this were to happen would there be a real concern to people.

Perhaps because there were confirmed zika hits in Miami and there has never been an attack on any of the resorts?

If you are this brave and/or cannot resist a bargain, the Damascus Sheraton is now offering a magnificent suite for minimal SPG points, but compare and contrast to the Gaza City Hilton which also provides free breakfast to HH members, not Mehadrin but I think the veggies used to be from Gush Katif.

Why not? They bill to your room like every other charge. You just don’t earn HHonors for that spend
