Ask your resort about a complimentary tour of Male. We were offered one on our return (checked out at 11AM and our flight out of MLE wasn't til late PM). It was fascinating- I've never been to India but I'm assuming this is a little taste of that crazy motorcycle hustle and bustle.
There might b a prob with getting back to the seaplane airport i remember them mentioning that its a restricted area double check with hotel of course

Depends on the resort. I remember a hotel shuttle transferring us to the lounge. Would never have found the place on our own.

Regardless, you should drop your bags at the lounge first. They might be able to transport you to the ferry to Male from there.

Once you leave the seaplane area you can only return if you have a departing flight on a seaplane.

I realize that this is a highly subjective question, but here goes.

I have a couple of nights booked at the Waldorf for a stay next month. It's a standard room, so king beach villa with pool. I'm still working out the details with them, but I'm diamond so presumably I'll be getting something for breakfast for free.

I can book an over water villa at the JW or the St Regis, just no status with them.

So the question is, do I choose what is (maybe?) a nicer hotel, without as fancy of a room, and get whatever they give me for breakfast, or a fancier room in a (maybe) not as nice hotel?

Next month is 2020, you can 'downgrade' for free to an overeater/reef villa. Just ask them and they will do it for you.

Have you read reviews of the Waldorf? People have had really bad experiences there.

I have read on FT (187 pages) and it's mostly good reviews, besides the prices on food which is not relevant to us.
(And besides MaldivesFreak who seems to swear only by Rangali...)

Bad is relative. As long as I have a bed and the water is still there I can't imagine not enjoying.

In that case why not go to the conrad? You'll save a lot of money and points.

At STR if given the option to upgrade to St Regis Overwater Villa not on the Sunset side or to a regular Sunset OWV, which is better? I do want a warm pool which Sunset villas have but the larger villa and pool are enticing as well.

ST Regis villas are all larger than regular villas but they only have one on the Sunset side so there's a small chance of getting it.

Most likely you won't get a St Regis suite regardless of side.
I inquired and was told they don't upgrade to St Regis suite and above. Now its possible but dont keep Hope's high.

I think sunset is a better option.

Not sure I understand your answer. I'm talking about paying for an upgrade. I would pay to upgrade to STR OWV or to Sunset OWV. Obviously STR is more expensive than a regular Sunset. But if you pay for Sunset you are guaranteed a Sunset. However if you pay even more for STR Suite you may or may not get the one single one on the Sunset.

So just to clarify my question is: is a guaranteed Sunset villa with the warmer pool better than a most likely non-sunset STR OWV or vice vs?
