- At WA you can book straight into an OW / Reef villa with basic redemptions. At STR it books into Garden villas and while you can sometimes upgrade for very cheap through Marriott (see a few posts above), that option isn't always available.

I see upgrades available at STR with minimal points available most of the time (not just sometimes). More often actually than you can find 120k x 5 nights on points at WA without having to be obsessed to check multiple times daily. An STR OWV is very spacious and usually not hard to get.

I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either one and would go wherever I find the best availability that suits my schedule.

It comes and goes. I follow the dedicated FT thread and often ppl complain the option to upgrade through Marriott isn't available, and that the hotel quote them $500++ per night.

Totally agree

I do as well :). Usually the option isn't available yet if they booked at the maximum number of days out (I think its 330 days but I don't remember) - if they wait a few weeks, the upgraded room options will get loaded. Also perhaps during the peak holiday times end of December to early January don't have availability. Other than that, if you check any other time of the year it will be there - I've done random dates through early December 2021 and always see multiple room options available.

If they have points for either one and its their first time they will enjoy both. From what I'm reading it seems that Waldorf has somewhat better snorkeling though.
now having done the research, seems like WA is bigger, more going on easier access (no need for seaplane) and better snorkeling however not as good Butler service.

WA OWV (283 sqm) is larger than a regular OWV at STR but if you get what's called an STR OWV (282 sqm) you're talking about practically the same size. Both are very large at over 3k sqf. A standard OWV at STR is ~2k sqf which gives you ample space as well. Honestly most people are going just as a couple and really have no need for so much space.

Regarding the transfer via yacht, yes its easier, but many people enjoy the sea plane experience and the view from above of all the small islands and the resorts and/or towns on some of them. I didn't enjoy the noise, but the view was definitely spectacular, something you would obviously never get to see from a yacht. So both have their pros. The cost is pretty similar though.

While if you look at WA calendar there are very sporadic days with 120k availability outside of the next 10 days. Perhaps as long as COVID is still an issue we will see close in availability because of cancelations due to constantly revolving circumstances and changing travel rules. But if you want to plan and book for further out its very difficult to find consecutive days with rooms for 120k at WA.

I meant larger as in the resort as a whole (acitvies, happenings etc) Additionally I myself (and others I'm sure) got absolutely hammered by the seaplane overage charges...

Oh ok. Yes, that's true, WA is a larger resort.

I would actually love to try WA if I can ever find availability for dates that work for me which is proving to be quite difficult.

I don't remember the overage charges on the seaplane to be that bad. Maybe $50 bucks or so. And we brought plenty of food, did not rely on their offer of ridiculously priced meals from Australia.

iirc their type and USB

Correct. We did also have 1 outlet in the bathroom that was US type.

I had a lot of stuff, trust me lol. Also that charge is mostly applicable one way of course. Ya WA overall seems to be better and bigger, though obviously the ST Regis is lovely as well.

What's the best way to book if I want to fly EK, then on the way back stop for 2 days in dubai? Economy is showing $1,230 rt when doing this as a multi city booking. Would prefer to book some kind biz/first using a xfer from amex, what's my best option? MR-EK? MR-QF?

I checked to DXB, but to MLE you will see similar difference.

EK biz is 72.5k each way when booked as round-trip. QF is 104.5k each way in biz. So you will need to use more miles with QF.

Don't you need to cancel 30 days in advance?
