Getting Scuba license, PADI vs SSI
« on: May 01, 2012, 09:20:22 AM »
I'm planning on getting the open water license..

I would rather learn the theory at home so I save some time when I travel. SSI offers it online free of charge while PADI charged for e-learning.. any disadvantage to getting SSI? Anyone familiar?

They're both widely accepted internationally.

It's the approach that differs. SSI pretty much makes you buy all the equipment up front (so you're invested in the hobby), whereas PADI allows you to buy it as you go.

I'm PADI certified, and I had a great experience.  I can't speak for SSI.

You need to find out what the total cost is going to be. It'll be substantially more than just that $225.

My bet is it'll be closer to $400 or $500 and that's not even including the open-water dives.

It seems like the classes itself up until the dives without gear rental is $225

Yes, but most places require you buy your own mask, fins, etc., which can easily cost $200+.

Additionally, some places charge for the materials for the class work. You should find out for sure.

SSI offers free E-learning that's why I'm considering it.. It saves me 2 days of learning at a resort...

Are the prices comparable between the two?

a lot of places accepting both .
my scuba trainer ( he is training for 40 year's already ) told me that a lot of times he bumped into places that accept only Padi and no SSI
i'm train for both ( add $100 for it )

Honestly, I'm not sure. I've only been scuba out of the country.
