YudiG,

I go to La Cafe around once a week - it is great ~ tasty food, fast, pleasant place to hang out.  My kids love their pizza - I like their paninis, fish fajitas, fish and chips, veggie burrito, etc.

Enjoy!

I visited La Cafe on Sunday night after a day at Sea World. We called ahead to order a pizza, fish & chips, and salmon with vegetables. The staff was overwhelmed by the extremely large combination of tourists and locals. Not enough seating, people were complaining about wait times. They only have one register and could not handle the crowd. I'll give credit to the girl who was working the counter. She apologized to each customer and greeted each with a smile. Even though we ordered ahead and I could see our food waiting for us, it took a half an hour to reach the front of the line just to pay and receive our food. Of course, by that time, the food was cold and, to make matters worse, the pizza crust was burned.

I wish someone in San Diego could make a pizza like Nagila in L.A.

Another vote for La Cafe. I ate there last for three days straight and was always impressed. The food and service were always great. It wasn't overcrowded when I was there and it was the summer vacation season.

Here's a frontline report from Summer Grille. I ordered by phone two hours prior to arrival. The food was ready about 20 minutes after I got there...so basically to play it safe..you must order a good 90 minutes in advance to minimize the wait....it did seem that the other folks were experiencing a bit of a wait.

What you can do is get there at 6:45, order your food, go to mincha/maariv at 7:05 and by the time you get back at 7:45, it should be ready or close to it.

We tried the BBQ Brisket Sandwich - pretty good. The Mexican fish tacos - I may get lambasted for this - are way better than fish grills! The hot dogs with beef fry and extra onions were quite impressive.

Their desserts seal the deal. The hot monster cookie with chocolate ice cream is made to order so order as you're winding down. It won't dissapoint and is one of the better desserts I've come across in my world travels. The chocolate brownie was also a crowd pleaser.

There is plenty of indoor outdoor seating. The wait staff is definitely overworked, but extremely cordial and pleasant doing their best to get everyone served and keep everybody happy.

The menu is excellent and the prices are great. They have daily specials so ask. Over all, this place get two thumbs up in my book and we all should appreciate the fact that the folks there have set this place up enabling the hundreds of tourists to sit down and enjoy a great meal in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

As far as Sea World, the new Turtle exhibit is a waste of our time and SW's money. A shame they didn't invest in new rides. The skyride and ocean cable cars are now free with general admission - I guess they figured people needed something somewhat exciting to do at Seaworld.

For those who have the seen the original shamu show where the trainers would actually go in the water, don't waste your time with the new one titled, One Ocean. It will disappoint. The exec's at SW really need to overhaul the place quickly. Can anyone report if kids still enjoy the place?

Thanks for the tips on La Cafe/Birch Aquarium, headed over soon and will post the results.

Enough for now, more to come!

Forgot to mention the snack bar at the JCC (in La Jolla) - - - fast and delicious (and kosher-used to not be).

Well well well...La Cafe was extraordinary!

I can report that the service was fast and cordial...the portions good, prices were fair and the food delectable.

Here is what we can reccommend -

The breakfast burrito - eggs, hash browns and cheese
The Shakshuka w/ a side of charissa (SPICY)
The mushroom onion omlette w/ mozzarella
The freshly baked breads

and last but not least, the bagel and lox!

A must stop for all hungry travelers...enjoy!

Sea World, SD Zoo, Lego Land in Carlsbad. In La Jolla you must check out the cliffs (near the glider port) and the cove. Also with 70 miles of beach and perfect weather you can't go wrong!

Plenty to do, but what's arguably the best kosher scene in the world is just out of reach while you're left with mediocrity from a grocery store.

Come on the deli in Ralphs is great, you have the meat place in the jcc and la cafe. If someone is such a foodie that they can't enjoy some of the most beautiful sights Hashem gave the US without THE BEST food, LA is only 2hrs away!;-)

Come on the deli in Ralphs is great
Come again? What exactly did I miss that was great there?  It's decidedly OK IMHO.
Waiting an entire hour for a poor excuse of a burger and a grilled cheese sandwich isn't my idea of great.  The fried chicken isn't bad, but I can't imagine calling it great.  The sushi was also OK at best.

Not a reason to not go to SD, but like I said, so close yet so far from best kosher scene in the world.
