Anyone with experience parking for free or cheap near residence inn for La Jolla?  Alternatively,
Any way to get parking for free on award stays? Thanks
I called last week and asked the hotel about giving me free parking for my stay and they told me they don't give complimentary parking but they told me there is free Street parking but it's hard to find.

Are there any pizza shops/dairy restaurants in SD? Seems from the wiki there aren't.
Check out Beth Jacobs website, they have once a week

Don't think so currently. They come and go fairly regularly

PSA For anyone coming to San Diego- chabad La Jolla opened up abminyan for shabbas literally in the residence inn La Jolla! I had no idea till I randomly saw frum people today.  They had a full delicious lunch everyone was invited too and they wanted to get the word out to let travelers know. Minyan Friday night and shabbas day in meeting room above the lobby, toys for kids in the playroom and a great energetic young rabbi who mostly does campus kiruv during school season (minyan still located here during winter as well). Please spread word, really enhanced shabbas here.

I think la Jolla might be closest.  Another idea would be to contact a Chabad Rabbi in Mission Valley area and ask them if you can buy one from them

we went on a trip to SD from 8/28-9/3 and thought to write up a small TR on it. my first TR ;D. hope its ok to post here

Planning: we decided we wanted to go somewhere with nice warm weather but not too hot and a place where our kids, 2 and 1, will enjoy. the main options were Arizona or Cali, FL wasn't an option cuz we go every yr and we wanted to try something new. We saw that Arizona during the summer time was too hot and since we did LA already we decided SD was our best option. as per activities we saw SD had a lot to offer. we got 2 4day SD GoCards from Costco which included a whole lot of activates and since both my kids were under 3 they didn't have to pay!

flights: originally I booked flights with SW with a stop as they didn't have nonstop on my dates. I had CP so I only had to pay for 3 tickets. when I told DW about the stopover she begged me to find a nonstop as she didnt want to have a stopover with two kids under 3. so I checked DL and I saw that on the way there they had a nonstop for 12K for the way there but the way back was more expensive (25K) bc of labor day weekend. I tried looking for any award flights for 9/3 but I couldn't find anything. I then remembered about the BP 50% rebate and since I had selected delta that was a no brainer. the flight OW from SD to JFK was about 300$ which ended up costing me around 15K points after the rebate. I also booked seats for both my kids- best thing ever!

Hotel: I wanted to stay walking distance to a shul so I can walk there on Shabbat and DW wanted a room with a kitchen. after reading this thread the best option was Residence inn La Jolla- each room had a kitchen and they had a minyan in the hotel itself with a very nice Kiddush (thanks mringelheim for the info and help) . I had a 5 night Marriott certificate cat 1-5 but since the hotel was a category 6 I had to spend a few more points to update the certificate. I also needed one more night so I just paid for it 200$ for the "Executive suite"- its a duplex with two rooms living room and kitchen. excellent room!

Day one Monday 8/28
we arrived at the hotel at 1, kids were drained from the flight so we put them to nap and unloaded our stuff. once they work up around 4 went to Ralph to do some grocery shopping. we got back at 530 and wanted to take the kids out to have some fun- we search and saw there was a chucky cheese around the area so we decided to go there and spend a few hours there- the kids loved it! when we got back the kids and us were drained so we ate dinner that DW brought from NY and we all passed out.

Day 2 Tuesday 8/29
we decided to activate our 4 day go card so we can take full advantage of it. our first activity was the Safari since my oldest kept telling us he wanted to see the animals. that day was super hot - the guy at the safari told us was 110 degrees. we were all shvitzing but we had a blast! we got very close to the animals the kids loved it! we didn't stay too late bc the heat was becoming unbearable. so we decided to leave around 3 go back to hotel relax by the pool a bit and go out for dinner- we looked up a few places and we saw there was an israeli place by the JCC near the hotel. the food was good nothing special but it did the job. we went back to hotel and called it a night.

Day 3 Wednesday 8/30
we were debating whether to go to LEGOLAND or sea world and we decided that well do LEGOLAND and sea world on Thursday. I gotta say LEGOLAND was my favorite park! they had plenty of rides for lil kids. after finishing with all the dry rides we decided to go to the water park (additional cost 25$) but def worth it. once we got to the entrance we were told that half the water park was closed bc they didn't have enough staff ( apparently in SD they start school last week of Aug) but they said since I wasn't told about this when I came in that they will give me 3 tickets to the water park that expire 8/31/18. water park was a lot of fun and altho most of the rides are for older kids we still had plenty to do. best part was the park was empty! we got back to hotel DW made dinner and we went to sleep.

Day 4 Thursday 8/31
we went to sea world- again the park was completely empty. they don't have that many rides mainly shows. we loved the dolphin and sea lion show. there is also a place where u can see penguins real close so that was fun. we stayed there until closing around 5pm went to the hotel chilled in the pool for a bit had dinner and fell asleep

Day 5 & 6 Friday & shababt 9/1-9/2
we didn't know what to do but we still had one day of usage og the go card so we decided to go to Belmont park, for those who live in new York its like a coney island luna park. again the place was empty, no lines , was great. since we were right by the board walk we rented bikes with kids trailers and biked on the boardwalk. then we went back to Ralph to do some Shabbat shopping and came back to get ready for Shabbat. Shabbat there was a minyan at 10am with a very nice Kiddush and after that we pretty much chilled the rest of the day. motzei Shabbat we packed everything for the flight next day at 1230pm

Day 7 Sunday 9/3
went early in the morning to coffee bean got a few sweets for the flight back and headed to airport. we got to the gate right when we started boarding- flight was as good as it can be with 2 kids under 3.

overall we had a great time. thanks to all that helped with answering question on this forum. time to start planning our next trip!

I was in SD in early August and enjoyed it too. I'm glad you enjoyed.
I have the same feeling about planning the next trip.

We went to SD for a few days. I wanted to be able to share with everyone my experiences, and to pay it forward. We researched the area for months, and looked at guides and on DD's for help. Thank you for everyone for their ideas.

We made a trip going from 11/8 in the evening from EWR-SAN, and then the red eye on 11/13/ from LAX-EWR.

We took Alaska Airlines from EWR-SAN. We got the tickets for about $260 rt. I used an Alaska Airlines CC for the trip, so we got free bags.  We have the Chase Sapphire, but you can't use the lounge in the terminal in the evening. They had Gogo internet on board, which we didn't want to pay for. You can get free chat and whatsapp, and because of that some internet snuck in on the phones.

We rented a car from Avis. The car rental center takes about a 10 minute drive from the terminal to the center.

We need to stay within walking distance of Bankers Hill for Shabbos. As a result we were very very limited in our hotel selection.

We ended up staying at the Hilton Garden Inn San Diego/Downtown.  We ended up booking it at a cheaper rate through the Sapphire Rewards Card.  The hotel is also a Homewood Suites.  The hotel was clean, and nice. They were wonderful for shabbos. The employees knew to let us upstairs and let us in the doors, and did it with a smile, and offered to turn on and off any lights that were needed.

Parking is a major issue in SD. The hotel charged $40 a night for parking. You can find street parking, but you have to be careful about rules and regulations. Generally parking is limited once 8am hits. So if you park overnight in a 2 hour parking zone from 8am-6pm then you can park overnight until 10am free of charge. If its 30 minute parking from 8am-6pm, then you can park until 830 free of charge.

There are also a few free spots all the time. We had to make sure to get them for shabbos.

We landed Wednesday night and checked in.

Thursday morning, we went to Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf for breakfast. We went to the Mission Valley location. Its in a shopping center which also has a Trader Joes (which has kosher wine, and raw kosher chicken). We then went to La Jolla. We went to the beach, and the Childrens Cove where there are sea lions. It is amazing.  After that we visited the JCC for lunch. The kosher cafe is in the lobby. The food was good, and not crazy expensive. We then went to Ralph's in La jolla to check it out before shabbos. They have a large kosher section, and kosher take out and Sushi. We went back there Friday for shabbos. Remember they close at like 1 or 2 in the winter for shabbos, and then you won't be able to order anything from the deli counter. On Friday they had delicious fresh challah for shabbos. The Challah on Thursday was not fresh. There is a full and complete kosher line and section. They also sell kosher wines as well. They even have a shabbos special with 2 chickens, 2 pounds of salad and a challah for $26.00. Not Bad at all.

We then drove to Coronado Island. The views were breathtaking. Then back to Coffee Bean for dinner.

Friday was back to LaJolla and Ralphs and Lazy Bean.

Shabbos  we had to be in Bankers Hill. The Hills are steep. San Francisco type steep. A cool thing is that the airplanes are literally on top of you when coming in to land. Its really amazing. We then walked to Balboa Park and did whatever free stuff you could do there on Shabbos.  Balboa Park is a must go to, even if you don't go to the zoo. Lots of cool and pretty stuff.

After shabbos back to coffee Bean.  We then went to LA for Sunday and Monday.

Sunday, we drove from SD to LA in the morning. On the way we stopped in Anaheim for Coffee Bean. Its right near Disney. We then went to Fish Grill on Beverley Boulevard for lunch. It was delicious. There is nothing like it in the NYC area, where we live.

We then drove around Beverley Hills (nice houses, we even went on some open houses), Rodeo Drive (nothing special, and overrated), Hollywood Hills, and then went to the Warner Brothers Studio Tour. It was pricey, but really really cool. The Tour is a little more than 2 hours, before they drop you off at the last part which is walk though. The movie sets and lots are really cool. We went to the Ellen set and the Big Bang Theory Set as well.

We then drove to Oxnard to go to Tierra Sur. It took us about an hour from Burbank to Oxnard. We decided to stay at the Embassy Suites in Oxnard which is right on the water. Our room was a 2 room suite, with 2 bedrooms, with our patio right on the beach. It is a nice place. It comes with breakfast in the morning with lots of kosher stuff, and they will show you what is kosher. TS is about 15 minutes from the Embassy Suites. The restaurant is all that its made out to be. Everything was delicious, and the service was impeccable. We were really happy we went.

In the morning we had breakfast, (stopped again at Coffee Bean - kosher in Oxnard), and drove to LA. We went to Griffith Park, saw the Hollywood sign, and then went back to Fish Grill for Lunch. After lunch, we did a little shopping, and then headed to Hollywood Boulevard, where we had Jimmy Kimmel Tickets. I've never been to the area before, and its a bit seedy. It reminded me of walking around the Village in the mid 90's.  We walked around, saw the Jimmy Kimmel show (tiny studio), and ran to Jeff's for dinner. It was delicious. We then ran to LAX to catch our flight back.

Rental return in LAX is a disaster. it took us almost 45 minutes from the time we gave back our car, until we got to the gate.

We flew Virgin America, from LAX-EWR. The flight was nice, and uneventful . The same internet as Alaska (since they are co-owned now). No lounge again, since Alaska claimed it was full.

I hope that this is helpful to someone.

I hope that this is helpful to someone.

great post! Thanks!

We were really happy we went.

thank you for posting. LAX car rental is horrendous, I think it's worth returning in the city and taking an Uber. You missed absolutely nothing in the Alaska lounge, in my opinion the terminal is nicer.
