Can we make a "Flame Free" thread for newcomers?
« on: May 03, 2012, 09:46:40 PM »
I like this site a lot but i just wish there could be a flame free thread for all noobies who can ask questions (IE how to search, or help finding certain threads, or just simply for people to say hello/share their story of how they found the site etc.)
I'm noticing that sometimes noobies ask foolish questions and the DDF veterans have little or no patience for them (which is understandable) but i always feel bad for noobies who make their first post and are berated for not searching first etc. It can make them feel uncomfortable and maybe even drive them away.

Does anyone else think this is a good idea?

Sounds like a good idea, but the issue is the noobies aren't gonna be able to find this thread or notice it to post in it, so there really wont be a purpose ;)

+1 I think that's a great idea. I've been noticing that more and more around here. Rude responses. People being upset at the noobs. This thread should be  A place to ask ANYTHING where you can only comment if you want to be helpful and patient.
If not, don't comment here.

It has been discussed before. Personally the only way I think it has a chance at working is if there can be an entire new section added (GD, CC, JS, n00by)

Let's name a thread just for beginners. :)

Its not a bad idea. But how would that be implemented? Every time a n00b posts, you post a link to the n00b thread?

Wouldn't that also insult them/drive them away?

Sounds like a grand idea.  Not everyone knows everything and not everyone can figure out how to navigate the site.

How about this: On top of every section where the rules of the thread are "stickied" there should be a flame free stickied thread permanently on the top (Highlighted and in big font) where people can see it right away when they first join the site. It should say something like "ATTENTION NEWCOMERS: PLEASE READ THIS THREAD FIRST"

And in the flame free master thread maybe we can have links to the acronym threads/other useful master threads

The only way this will work is if "certain" people can't access the thread.

I think we should create a new thread named beginners so they know where to go. And let's put a note to let people know if they don't wanna write anything helpful they SHOULDN'T write at all.

But what about those people who need to be able to make these comments to make themselves feel better?
