Topic Wiki

This is the thread where you can ask any random question you have. Feel free to ask even the most basic questions that you otherwise might be embarrassed to ask. This is the thread for beginners, so veterans here will treat you nicely. Ask a beginner's Q in some other threads and no guarantee of that same treatment. ;)
People here want to help, so just have some patience, follow the tips below and hopefully someone will help you when they have a chance.

If you looking for a particular thread you once saw and can't find it, this is not the place to ask. Check out Help Me Find It and ask there.

How to ask a question in this thread:
Click the blue reply button at the top or bottom of the page, type your question, and click post!

Some helpful tips for eliciting answers from other members:
- Keep your question short and precise. No one wants to read a megillah.
- The more questions you ask in one post, the less likely any will be answered. People are willing to answer a question or two, but if you ask all the questions that apply to your particular issue, you're expecting to be spoonfed. Members don't like holding out the spoon, so ask accordingly.

What service will you have there?  An Israeli number or American?  If American, just fwd to that number.  If it is a permanent move, just port the number.

You can set it up yourself. Golan gives you up to two US numbers that when called will ring your Israeli number. Just forward your current number to the virtual Golan number and you're all set.

Assuming you're referring to the two international numbers you get to forward to your Israeli number, I believe you can't. Since it appears that you can't choose any US number, rather are given one by Golan.

Yes that is I'm referring to and that's what I thought as well.
But he seems to imply otherwise:

What I was suggesting, was that if it was going to be a permanent move, then port the existing US POTS number to any virtual service of your choice.

Perhaps I misunderstood the OP's question.

After reading many of the threads on the forums, I see that cashing out UR points instead of transferring them to hotel/airline points is a big "waste."
So can someone explain to me why the following rationale is incorrect?
I would like to stay at a Cat 5 Hyatt for 1 week in the summer. The going rate for a standard room at that time is $192.
This would require 140k UR points. Now if I cash out my 140k UR points, I would get the same room paid, $56 change, and I would earn points on those nights as they are paid.
What am I missing here?

Your analysis makes sense.  In this case, the cash price is better than the award rate.
So you should pay cash and earn points on those nights.  BUT you should hold those UR for when you can get a better value.
When you 'cash out' UR with Chase you're buying GC's or *shudder* merchandise at a value of 1 cent (or less) per point.
If the hotel in your summer vacation was $500 a night, and was still 20K points a night, you'd do much better using points.  Then each point would be used in lieu of 2.5 cents. So your points are 'worth' more.
For many airlines the award 'cost' price is set.  And even when the cash price goes up, the award price stays the same.  So using awards gives you a big cpp (cents per point) value.
So hold the points to use when they're worth using.  Not this time. And not cashing out.

Problem is.. I don't know when I will get a chance to use my points in a more worthwhile way, and right now I don't want to shell out cash if I can use/convert points....

So sell your points now, and use them to pay for your trip.
