mint.com is very helpful, it sends out reminder emails when you have a bill coming up.
But the best method I've found to avoid any mishaps is to pay off most of your credit card immediately after the spend, and then use auto-pay so that you don't have to worry.

Willi auto pay not process a payment if I already processed one manually?

correct. If you've paid, auto pay won't. It's acatually good for the credit rating idea of paying off most of the balance before the bill posts. Then auto pay pays the small remaining bill without you having to bother with it.

I don't know. But if you actually pay twice, you don't need to pay next month or you can ask for a refund.
When I'm manually paying at the time when auto pay should be kicking in: I cancel auto pay. pay manually. set up auto pay again. (Barclay's doesn't let you set up auto pay when a scheduled payment is incomplete. Others have no problem.)
