Topic Wiki

This is the thread where you can ask any random question you have. Feel free to ask even the most basic questions that you otherwise might be embarrassed to ask. This is the thread for beginners, so veterans here will treat you nicely. Ask a beginner's Q in some other threads and no guarantee of that same treatment. ;)
People here want to help, so just have some patience, follow the tips below and hopefully someone will help you when they have a chance.

If you looking for a particular thread you once saw and can't find it, this is not the place to ask. Check out Help Me Find It and ask there.

How to ask a question in this thread:
Click the blue reply button at the top or bottom of the page, type your question, and click post!

Some helpful tips for eliciting answers from other members:
- Keep your question short and precise. No one wants to read a megillah.
- The more questions you ask in one post, the less likely any will be answered. People are willing to answer a question or two, but if you ask all the questions that apply to your particular issue, you're expecting to be spoonfed. Members don't like holding out the spoon, so ask accordingly.

But redeeming for cash back is definitely not worth it?

I use the selling price as my use benchmark.  Since UR points have gone for 1.4-1.7, I try not to use them unless I get such value.

NOTE: theres a reason this is posted in the beginners thread!(have mercy!) 1)whats the point in accumulating tons of points/miles if your just going to cancel the card? aren't the point/miles getting cancelld if you don't have the credit card?
2) a guy could have a million points but they'r all from different programs(UR, AMEX membership, citi etc.) are they all , or any of them , combineable to be worth something, or do you have to use them in each program separately? ???
nothings impossible- the word itself says Im possible

Miles don't expire right when you close the card. Points you transfer out before you close the card.

1) As per http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/53213

Q: Won’t I lose my points if I close a card?
A: Airline or hotel credit cards accumulate points in your airline or hotel loyalty account.
Those points remain there even if the card is no longer active, and are subject to the normal expiration dates that you can find in this post.
You will not instantly lose any earned Hyatt/Starwood/American/BA/Delta/Southwest/United/etc. points just for closing their credit card. Some representatives use scare tactics and say your points or tickets will be lost if you cancel the card but it’s just misinformation.  The only thing you will lose are points earned from spending since your last statement closed, so you may want to wait for your next statement to close before closing a card.
Proprietary credit card point programs (American Express Membership Rewards, Barclays Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, Chase Ultimate Rewards) do not expire as long as you keep at least one card open that is enrolled in their respective program.

2) Points in Proprietary programs under the right circumstances can be transfered to airline Frequent flyer programs for you to use to book tickets.  There are several FF programs that participate with more than one proprietary programs.  (for example both UR and MR can transfer to BA)

ok so that means if I want to cancel a sapphire card I don't have to move point to another chase card before cancelling bc its all under UR rite?

You would want to transfer it to the card you are keeping open, before canceling.
