Topic Wiki

This is the thread where you can ask any random question you have. Feel free to ask even the most basic questions that you otherwise might be embarrassed to ask. This is the thread for beginners, so veterans here will treat you nicely. Ask a beginner's Q in some other threads and no guarantee of that same treatment. ;)
People here want to help, so just have some patience, follow the tips below and hopefully someone will help you when they have a chance.

If you looking for a particular thread you once saw and can't find it, this is not the place to ask. Check out Help Me Find It and ask there.

How to ask a question in this thread:
Click the blue reply button at the top or bottom of the page, type your question, and click post!

Some helpful tips for eliciting answers from other members:
- Keep your question short and precise. No one wants to read a megillah.
- The more questions you ask in one post, the less likely any will be answered. People are willing to answer a question or two, but if you ask all the questions that apply to your particular issue, you're expecting to be spoonfed. Members don't like holding out the spoon, so ask accordingly.

They probably won't approve both together. You're gonna have to try separately for each one. Many times they say only 2 per 30 days. But it's possible to get 3.

with regards to UR, they allow transfers to airlines, and they also have an option to transfer to someone else's UR account, but by transfering to another persons UR account, you are asking for trouble. so when selling UR, make it clear to the broker that you only want the points transferred to an airline and NOT to someone else's UR account. and as i said, i did this with "sell miles now" in august and they were very easy to deal with about it.
Regarding AA or United miles, they just book a flight using your miles
I have no idea about MR, i have never sold MR to someone (i assume its the same as UR?)
how do you find brokers on DDF
or do they just find you?

Where is the right thread to ask what the best way to book a flight to a destination using miles is?

I know where I can find trip reports and notes on where to eat and stay but not how to best book. Background is I need to fly out to the west coast for a week going NYC->LAX->SFO->NYC for a couple of important business meetings. It won't be too much work so I'd like to take my wife and potentially one or more kids along. I have about 160k chase points and 120k american points and 55k united points, all earned within the last 4 months. I want to know if its worth using the miles in this case or paying cash?

I don't mind to pay for my ticket as its under the company and we can take the deduction but would be nice to take my wife and at least 1 of the kids whom we promised to take to disneyland along with us.

a) 328 / 5000 = .0656  or 6.5% usage (utilization ratio) on the card.  Which is fine.
b) business cards (usually) don't count toward your utilization ratio.

I'm spending 8000 paying it back up to  328 then letting statement close then paying it
