Topic Wiki

This is the thread where you can ask any random question you have. Feel free to ask even the most basic questions that you otherwise might be embarrassed to ask. This is the thread for beginners, so veterans here will treat you nicely. Ask a beginner's Q in some other threads and no guarantee of that same treatment. ;)
People here want to help, so just have some patience, follow the tips below and hopefully someone will help you when they have a chance.

If you looking for a particular thread you once saw and can't find it, this is not the place to ask. Check out Help Me Find It and ask there.

How to ask a question in this thread:
Click the blue reply button at the top or bottom of the page, type your question, and click post!

Some helpful tips for eliciting answers from other members:
- Keep your question short and precise. No one wants to read a megillah.
- The more questions you ask in one post, the less likely any will be answered. People are willing to answer a question or two, but if you ask all the questions that apply to your particular issue, you're expecting to be spoonfed. Members don't like holding out the spoon, so ask accordingly.

If you were going to pick one CC for automatic payments due to the biller giving a 2% discount, taking an AF (or not) into consideration, which top 3 CCs would you choose in order of priority?
EDP if I was anyways paying the AF
Fidelity Amex (2% CB)
SPG/Arrival+
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Let me start off with a couple of questions. If I don’t get flamed I would say it is safe for anyone to ask a question.  :)

I just booked a ticket on BA flying on AA. One day between booking and flying. I was charged 20k points and a $5 fee. I was surprised I wasn’t charge some sort of fee for booking so late. Is this the way most programs work?

If I transfer points from one BA account to another family members BA account will this extend the time of expiation?

BA and a few others do not have a surcharge for booking within 21 days before departure, others for e.g United and AA  will charge a pretty hefty fee except to their elite members.

If you are looking for miles or points ill go with SPG or Everyday Preferred , for cash back Fidelity Amex or Citi Double Cash.

If I downgrade a card do I get a pull for the new card?

No, not even a soft pull.

If I go to London and I want to get 2 nights in a hotel paid with points what would be my best bet? I have a whole bunch of UR and some spg. What would I need to do?
I have no clue about points. I just spend money so I have racked up some points which I would like to use wisely.
Tia

I would use UR  for Hyatt, they have nice properties in London, I stay there frequently, SPG has nice properties too, but I like to use my SPG points to transfer to airlines at 20000 increments to get the bonus points, but with Marriott buying SPG and if you do not want to use your points for flights, it'll be a good time to burn your SPG points before the merger.

Hello. I just got approved for 2 southwest cards. Wanted to go for 1 more chase card today. What the best hotel credit card to get w/ chase? I currently have no hotel credit cards other than spg. Should I go for Hyatt, Mariott, Fairmount, Ritz-Carlton, or ihg? Any suggestions? Tia

First I would not apply for a 3rd Chase card after just being approved for 2 especially with their new rules. But if you still want to give it a shot ill go for IHG , they recently changed the free night to any category which is a great bargain for a low annual fee card.

Two months ago I got a college credit card from my bank with a score of 634. What is my next step to building credit/getting better credit cards?

Chase Freedom, the best no fee credit card and the easiest to get approved from Chase!!!

Barclays Arrival Plus
Amex Everyday Preferred
Amex SPG
Citi Double Cash
EDP if I was anyways paying the AF
Fidelity Amex (2% CB)
SPG/Arrival+

If you are looking for miles or points ill go with SPG or Everyday Preferred , for cash back Fidelity Amex or Citi Double Cash.

Thanks for the replies and even giving a 4th option! We currently have Barclay Arrival +, SPG (two mentioned above) and Capital One Sparks which I though might be suggested with 2% CB and a $59 AF. Course you don't get the 5% like with Barclay. Also have other cards that weren't contenders.

I've only checked one company but was surprised to find out that they allow auto payment via CC and give a 2% discount on a Medigap policy. Hoping Medicare Part B can also be paid by CC. :)

Going through old posts is the easy part. Remembering what you read and not getting deals mixed up is the hard part.

BTW, this is one of my favorite threads of any forum. :)

Can you elaborate? Usually it's not your card that is coded, but what you're buying with the card that is.

If the gift card is coded as debit credit etc.
Eta: IIUC different platforms accept different coding's for different things.
