Topic Wiki

This is the thread where you can ask any random question you have. Feel free to ask even the most basic questions that you otherwise might be embarrassed to ask. This is the thread for beginners, so veterans here will treat you nicely. Ask a beginner's Q in some other threads and no guarantee of that same treatment. ;)
People here want to help, so just have some patience, follow the tips below and hopefully someone will help you when they have a chance.

If you looking for a particular thread you once saw and can't find it, this is not the place to ask. Check out Help Me Find It and ask there.

How to ask a question in this thread:
Click the blue reply button at the top or bottom of the page, type your question, and click post!

Some helpful tips for eliciting answers from other members:
- Keep your question short and precise. No one wants to read a megillah.
- The more questions you ask in one post, the less likely any will be answered. People are willing to answer a question or two, but if you ask all the questions that apply to your particular issue, you're expecting to be spoonfed. Members don't like holding out the spoon, so ask accordingly.

So which one is it? Pay it off completely? Or leave some on?
Let the experts weigh in, but I'm pretty sure it's beneficial to let the statement close with a small balance. This way it shows you use your credit and pay back what you use. Whereas if you let the statement close with no balance your credit report won't show that you use your credit and paid back.

Leave some on before statement closes. Pay it off completely before it's due.

So I can use it as much as I want all month ( obv making sure to pay the debt before I get to 500$) and leave a small amount let say 50$ and pay them after the statement is due ?
I linked the credit card with my citi bank account and I set it up to paying full statement , is that good ?

Definitely do not pay off your entire balance before the statememt closes.

The OP's question was how to improve his credit score.   AFAIK leaving a small balance will not improve a score, more than paying it off will.

Leaving no balance is the same as not using the card....

There is a thread dedicated to helping out credit card beginners. You can try posting there.
In short
1 Use your card (make sure there is some credit used when the statement closes)
2 Pay on time
3 Dont use a large percentage of your available credit
-1
I'd guess that you aren't going to apply for another card within the first few months (at least) in that case, it is better to have the highest possible balance as statement closes and then pay it off AFTER the statement closes. In the future, banks will see that you borrowed $499 and payed back, as opposed to borrowed $10. The month before you apply for a new card either pay in full BEFORE the statement closes (acc. to CV and a few others) or leave a SMALL balance (acc to almost everyone else)...
The answer to both q's though is wait. If you use card and pay back Discover prob will increase your credit line in 6 months, and the main way to build credit is to borrow money and pay back.

Like I said, most.

Seeing people take a MR to get UA Silver or AA Gold/Plat is painful.
