Topic Wiki

This is the thread where you can ask any random question you have. Feel free to ask even the most basic questions that you otherwise might be embarrassed to ask. This is the thread for beginners, so veterans here will treat you nicely. Ask a beginner's Q in some other threads and no guarantee of that same treatment. ;)
People here want to help, so just have some patience, follow the tips below and hopefully someone will help you when they have a chance.

If you looking for a particular thread you once saw and can't find it, this is not the place to ask. Check out Help Me Find It and ask there.

How to ask a question in this thread:
Click the blue reply button at the top or bottom of the page, type your question, and click post!

Some helpful tips for eliciting answers from other members:
- Keep your question short and precise. No one wants to read a megillah.
- The more questions you ask in one post, the less likely any will be answered. People are willing to answer a question or two, but if you ask all the questions that apply to your particular issue, you're expecting to be spoonfed. Members don't like holding out the spoon, so ask accordingly.

How do you do that? SM the bank? Call?
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

I have a new Amex business account where I added a bank and made a payment already towards the current balance. Apparently you can't make another payment again until the statement ends because this is a new card. Will it work if I try making a payment over the phone?

You can also do a bill pay from your bank (or evolve using Visa GC   :))

You can either send them a check or make a payment from your bank account website (or BB/Serve).

You just can't initiate it from Amex cc website.

My mother wants to fly to Israel for free.
Her credit is "weak" which means she will only be able to get approved for 1-2 cards in the next six months.
Which two cards will get her there? (Coach is fine)
TIA!

Chase's BA has a 50K avios bonus.  You only need 35K for one way on Air Berlin booked with BA avios.
If you get 20K Chase's Ultimate Rewards points you can transfer them to avios. What to apply for, though?  I don't think Chase will give a weak credit risk 2 cards.
AA points also get you to Israel.  A citi AA card may do the trick.
Barclay's Arrival card gives points that can be used as 1 cent each toward travel expenses.  So she can get this card and use Barclay's points to pay off the price of the ticket.
Keep in mind that you can travel each way with a different pts/ airline.
idea: Apply for the Chase BA.  If she gets instant approval, then immediately apply for a Chase Freedom (20K bonus). If she gets pending, she calls Chase (on the same day) to highlight her good credit qualities and tries to get approved.  If she does, then apply for a Freedom.
If she's denied, maybe a call will help.
Applying for all cards soon after each other may  help them not see how many banks you've applied to.

A freedom is of no use without a sapphire or ink.

Well, i did an award search on BA, and i didn't see any award flights from Air Berlin. I wasn't sure if i was looking in the wrong place, or i just need to change my dates. Or do i need to search for and book each leg separately?

Best advice is use aa.com for oneworld availability. ONLY look at awards that have saaver or business saaver. Then when you find the AB flight you want, it'll have a stop over, look up each of the legs separately on BA.com to book.

AA.com can sometimes show phantom availability on AB.

Ah that's right I had heard that. Is there a better way though?

For a 20 year old with:

770 TU FAKO (credit karma)

787 EX Plus ($1)

1 USAA card with $300 CL opened in June

AU on a Discover with $12k opened in 1989

He lives in Israel, wants to fly to NY for free.  Needs points and cards with no FT fee.

Recommendations?
