Car Buying Master Thread
« on: May 04, 2012, 07:15:05 AM »
Thread for those looking to buy a new car....

What's a better option?

Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Prius or Toyota Camry?

Feel free to suggest car in that same price range....main factor is gas mileage...TIA

If so, Isn't it a no brainer than that the prius is the best option? Or look into the Camry hybrid or the sonata hybrid (but the 2011 version is mad ugly, the 2012 version hadn't come out when I looked into it, maybe they changed the design of the grill for 2012)

true..but what is the deal with the battery...does it need to be replaced...how long does it last?

I've heard people have been getting great deals on them and would it make more sense to get a toyota hybrid vs other company as they probably have more experience at this point, or is that point mute?

No idea, but the redesigned '13 Altima comes out very soon and will supposedly get incredible MPG.
Sonata didn't work for us due to the low non-adjustable passenger seat=my wife couldn't see the road when we too a test drive :D.  But I find the Altima to be a great car overall and very fun to drive.  On the highway gas mileage is incredible.

Understood, which is why for other people the sonata may be a better choice

before you buy a hybrid for its wonderful efficiency, run the math. many (if not most) times the premium you pay for the hybrid will not be made back in saved gas. unless gas gets a lot more expensive or u drive a lot

IIRC the premium for the sonata hybrids wasn't crazy
Also something to keep in mind its that many hybrids do better in city driving so if you are mainly driving in NYC it can really save

Dan, when you got your car did they give you an option to finance after all the "handling"?

Of course.  They make more money and offer more incentives when you finance.

Can you finance (for the incentives) then pay it all off at first payment, or do the closing costs outweigh the incentives making this strategy a loss?

There's often a minimum amount of time (6 months maybe?) before you can pay it off penalty-free.
