I guess typical AA behavior. I think their real mistake was awarding miles for flights flown on the passes

Yep, these guys earned 30-40 million miles!!

And without the need to use these miles for flights (unless they wanted to book a 3rd or 4th passenger) you could redeem for some serious merchandise.

what makes me personally nervous is that line:

Great point.

They should cut some slack to the guys that are milking their pass for $1+ million per year for the last ~20 years as they shuttle their ~~friends~~ customers around the globe on AA's dime (actually $200 million dimes to be a bit more accurate).

Their T & C didn't bar bartering. That was added in 1993.

Fake reservations was a practice tought to them by AA Reps, and not techinically wrong (AFAIK).
AA was losing $1M/yr on each pax, so if AA did illegaly cancel them, it would be worth it for AA to pay them $10M+ to settle, which they migh like, so this court case is not at ll bad for them.

I presume the T&C at time of sale matter. Anyway isn't the distinction between transfer to a friend and bartering a bit tough in court? (do u an example of something unanimously prohbitied to barter, but allowed to transfer?)

+1, I was wondering how such a coerced statment would be admissable in court.

But its nice AA did it in a way that will make to the mass media and make them pay for it! (Not to talk about the court case...)

The article was quoting the price in todays dollars. It cost 125,000 1981 dollars.
