Using miles to upgrade a purchased ticket is 35,000 miles.
in addition to $135 IIRC.

Right.

Does it have to be before the CC expiration date, or they don't look that closely?

Well, I'd imagine officially the card has to not only be unexpired, but has to be active and in good standing. But in actual practice, I've found the latter.

Do I need the card to book the ticket or can I book on another card and open this card right before I fly and then cancel if need be?

You don't need to use the ticket to buy the card, but opening it right before wouldn't be a good idea, as you have to have the card in hand.

If it's just for one suitcase, I wouldn't open a card just for that...

If you collect United miles, book using your UA card as you'll get more value compared to Amex Plat.

@tll w united you'll earn united miles, with elal AA.

I have never heard of an English-speaking person who prefers to fly elal over United.

Time of the day is a bigger consideration IMHO, bear in mind that when a lot of flights land @ TLV longs in passport control can take a long time.

Ok. United flies better time.
Someone mentioned not to upgrade to business on united why?
I applied for the united mileageplus card and will book as soon as I get it.
It doesnt pay to use teh 50k miles bec I can sell for more then they are worth when booking the flight.

I really appreciate everyones help!

Its expensive to upgrade, but other than that its for sure nicer up front. Perhaps people meant it is cheaper to use miles to buy a new tkt (when considering the cost of the coach ticket).

Flight prices can fluctuate widely, so it may not be smart to wait just for some extra miles when booking.

Bear in mind if you fly United to Istanbul you get double miles on the flight.

Thank you!
I booked using my mileageplus visa two tickets on united.
They went up overnight!
So now I have two lounge passes(I have two cards).
Do I have any other benefit?
Is there any other card worth having when flying untied that will give me some benefit?
